ISU women’s hoops picks up another recruit from Indiana

Makenzi Reasor has potential to be dual threat

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State women’s basketball team received a fourth straight verbal commitment from within the Hoosier State.

On Friday, 6-foot-21⁄2-inch forward Makenzi Reasor made her college decision known to the Indiana State coaching staff, following in the footsteps of two Indiana Elite AAU teammates, all of whom will graduate high school in 2012. The fourth, McCutcheon’s Jessica Valley, also plays for an Indiana Elite squad, but she will graduate in 2011.

Reasor will be a junior for Mount Vernon (Hancock) this fall, and she plays for a former teammate of ISU head coach Teri Moren. Mount Vernon coach Julie Shelton played with Moren at Seymour for Hall of Fame coach Donna Sullivan.

The Sycamores are getting a player that could be a dual threat in college because of her athleticism and size.

“ISU talked about having me like a 3 or 4 [position], utility kid to play both spots,” Reasor said.

“I think she has tons and tons of ability. Has great hands, hard worker, very good kid. I think she’ll be a really good college player,” Shelton said.

Reasor averaged 10 points and six rebounds for a Mount Vernon team that finished 18-3 and spent most of the season ranked fourth in Class 3A.

Reasor, who found her way into the starting lineup by midseason as a freshman, hopes to play the four position this fall, with Mount Vernon adding a post with more size to the mix.

Shelton said the Sycamores are getting a quality athlete that moves well.

“I help on defense, and I create plays and shots,” Reasor said. “I get up and down the floor really quick. I keep up with the guards pretty well.”

Reasor had recruiting interest from Western Michigan, Ball State and Florida, she said, but ISU’s coaching staff steered her toward joining her two AAU teammates, Plainfield’s Kasey Johnson and Hamilton Southeastern’s Brittany Wells.

Reasor said she had several reasons for choosing Indiana State.

“I absolutely love the coaching staff, and my teammates are going to go there,” she said. “I like the whole basketball program. I love the fact that almost 4,000 fans are there for every game.”

Reasor plans to work hard to develop her game over the next two seasons.

“I need to get a lot stronger. I need to improve my ballhandling skills,” Reasor said.

“She just continues to get better,” Shelton said. “With big kids, you tend to see them get better because of strength and experience. Since she has an inside and an outside game, she’ll continue getting better.”

ISU coaches cannot comment on a verbal commitment until the player signs a national letter-of-intent.
