Omaha, Neb. —
The defensive job the Indiana State men’s basketball team did on Creighton super sophomore Doug McDermott might be the envy of the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Sycamores held the nation’s second-leading scorer to 12 points, nearly halving his season average of 23.8 points.
Unfortunately for ISU, it was the other Bluejays the Sycamores couldn’t stop. And ISU could do precious little consistent scoring of its own either.
Creighton, the 18th-ranked team in the nation, proved it was more than worthy of its ranking with an easy 75-49 victory over the Sycamores in front of 17,411 at the CenturyLink Center.
While McDermott scored just 12, seven Bluejays scored at least six points to more than make up the difference.
“They might have the best I.Q. of any team I’ve seen in a long time. It speaks volumes about their head coach,” ISU coach Greg Lansing said. “They always make the right play.”
ISU (11-9, 2-7) lost its fifth in a row. At the midway point of the MVC season, the Sycamores are firmly entrenched in ninth place in the conference.
“We’re struggling. We’re not making shots and I think it affects us on the defensive end. It’s a common theme and it starts and ends right here,” Lansing said, referring to himself. “We hang our heads with missed shots. We have guys taking turns missing assignments. It’s a recurring theme and that’s on the head coach.”
Dwayne Lathan led ISU with 15 points, but ISU shot 32.7 percent from the field. It was the third straight game where ISU failed to top the 40 percent mark in shooting.
The first half started promising enough for the Sycamores, but morphed in the same pattern that has killed ISU in its previous four MVC road games — an inability to stop opposing shooters and inability to finish near the basket.
ISU trailed 12-10 seven minutes into the half, and would have led had the Sycamores not let Josh Jones free for a pair of 3-pointers. That penchant to leave 3-point shooters open would haunt ISU as Ethan Wragge hit a pair of treys in succession to increase the Bluejays advantage to 18-10.
ISU fought back within four, but couldn’t keep the offense going just as Creighton kicked into gear. Jahenns Manigat hit a pair of 3-pointers in a 10-0 Creighton run that put the Bluejays up 29-15.
Creighton (18-2, 8-1) would go on to shoot 7 of 11 from 3-point range in the first half.
ISU got its deficit below double-digits just once as it couldn’t finish makeable shots in the paint. In the final two minutes of the half, the Sycamores squandered several good chances close to the bucket. Center Myles Walker was 0-for-4 from the field in the first half and 1 of 5 overall. By Lansing’s count, ISU missed six layups in the first half.
“We have to be more confident in the paint. I have to try and be unstoppable again for my teammates,” Walker said. “Sometimes we don’t take good shots and don’t share the ball around the court, but it’s going to come around. We’re learning more with every game. We haven’t lost confidence.”
Creighton pounced when ISU couldn’t. The Bluejays finished the half on a 6-0 run, including a buzzer-beating runner by Antoine Young to make it 42-25.
ISU held McDermott to just six points. However, Manigat, Young, Wragge and Jones all had six points themselves. Creighton shot 56 percent from the field in the first half.
“[McDermott and Creighton center Gregory Echenique] had 11 and nine between them and that’s a pretty good job,” Lansing said. “The shooters we wanted to take away the three from, we can’t leave them. We let Wragge, Jones and Manigat get us. That really hurt. Those are guys on the perimeter we really wanted to guard and we didn’t when we needed to.”
Creighton began the second half as it left off the first half. A 17-5 run to start the half left no doubt as to the final outcome.
“The [Creighton] balance was awesome. Teams have decide whether its worth it to take away one or two guys away and let some other guys beat you,” said Creighton coach Greg McDermott on his team. “It’s probably more frustrating for [an opposing coach] than to watch Doug get 35.”
Because of the blowout, ISU’s bench got increased minutes. Freshman center Jake Kitchell played 13 minutes and continues to be a bright spot in an otherwise bleak period for the Sycamores. He had seven points and three rebounds. Some rest was also granted to Jake Odum (plantar fasciitis) and Carl Richard (back spasms) in the second half.
ISU next plays host to Northern Iowa on Wednesday.
