TERRE HAUTE —
The ISU women will be concentrating on hanging on to the ball today against Drake in Hulman Center.
The fact that Creighton attempted 18 more shots than ISU on Friday night was one of Sycamore women’s basketball coach Teri Moren’s biggest concerns.
One reason for that is that ISU committed 21 turnovers against the Bluejays, which is slightly above the team’s average of 18.7 per game.
Creighton brought full-court pressure in the second half, and Indiana State made 14 turnovers after a solid first half in that regard.
“If we look back at the reason we lost tonight, it was our inability to take care of the basketball tonight when they went to their press,” Moren said Friday.
Taylor Whitley played 31 minutes at point guard Friday, bringing optimism that ISU’s offensive execution can improve.
Today against a Drake squad that will be a hard-nosed competitor defensively, ISU will have to find improvement on the offensive end. While Deja Mattox was impressive, some of her production came as a result of “broken plays,” Moren said. Clean looks from the outside were hard to find for Anna Munn and Brittany Schoen.
“I just didn’t feel like offensively we were ever in any type of flow,” Moren said. “Those are Deja putting the ball on the floor and making a play. Give her credit for being aggressive and doing that. She’s talented enough to do that on her own. Especially down the stretch, offensively, we couldn’t really get a whole lot going. That’s what’s frustrating. If you don’t have an inside game, it’s tough on your guards to lose their defenders or get any type of open look. Shannon has to show up, has to play big minutes, and she has to score.”
Drake is led by 6-foot-3 senior Rachael Hackbarth, who is averaging 18.1 points and 10.2 rebounds. Despite foul trouble, Hackbarth had 12 points, 15 rebounds and three assists against Illinois State on Friday as the Bulldogs lost 71-67 in overtime.
