TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute South safety Tsali Lough joined Terre Haute North offensive lineman Dakota Vermillion earlier this week as future Indiana State football players.
Lough has watched the Sycamores as his older brother Brock Lough helped turn the Sycamores’ fortunes around with consecutive winning seasons under coach Trent Miles.
“The way Coach Miles turned the program around, I only see things getting better, I want to be a part of it,” said Lough, who made his verbal commitment to Miles on Sunday afternoon. “The hometown feel is definitely great and makes it easy so my family can watch.”
Lough, who played his senior year at 5-foot-8, 184 pounds, expects to redshirt as a freshman, while working hard with the strength and conditioning staff led by coach Dave McManus.
“I’ve known coach McManus for as long as Brock’s been at ISU. He’s a great guy and he’s good at what he does. Brock went in [as a freshman] at 200 pounds and put on 35 pounds of muscle,” Tsali Lough said.
“I want to be as strong and fast as I can be at 195-200. That would help me make plays.”
Vermillion committed to ISU following the Sycamores’ last home game. The 6-6, 280-pound offensive tackle expects to play the same position for the Sycamores. Vermillion turned down an offer to be a preferred walk-on at Indiana University, and he said Ball State offered him a scholarship.
But Miles made him a priority with the Sycamores, Vermillion said, adding that the Sycamores’ success helped push his decision toward staying home.
“Yes, back-to-back winning seasons. That’s one of the big reasons I wanted to stay here in town,” Vermillion said. “The winning attitude has changed at ISU.”
Vermillion also looks forward to working hard on his athleticism and strength.
“I’ve probably got some weight to put on. I’d like to get up to 320 [pounds] at some point. That would be my goal weight by my senior year,” he said.
Vermillion has battled some elite talent from the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference. He said right now his biggest strength is creating lanes for running backs.
“I like to run block more, but I see myself as a power blocking lineman,” Vermillion said.
Lough finished as South’s all-time leading tackler with 368 in his career after leading the Braves in the statistic each of the past three seasons. Lough also displayed his work ethic by putting together a 3.74 grade-point average in the classroom, an accomplishment which earned him one of 12 spots on the National Football Foundation Scholar/Athlete Team.
“Tsali’s been one of the best leaders and one of the best players we’ve had at South during my time here,” coach Mark Raetz said. “I think that the things he’s accomplished on and off the field say a lot for the type of kid he is and the type of competitor he is. He’s always been an honor roll kid, taking advanced classes. He won an award this past week. So he’s a kid that really tries to do all the right things on the field, in the classroom and off the field.”
Raetz said Lough has worked hard to improve his abilities on the field.
“The position he played is really the spot that we put our best player. We move him around based on what the other team is doing. If it’s a running team, we’ve got him downhill making a lot of plays. If it was a team that liked to throw it, he was a key part of our pass coverage,” Raetz said.
While Lough wasn’t blessed with blazing speed, he’s shown it is something that one can build with hard work.
“Speed is something he’s worked at since the time he was a freshman. He went up to Indianapolis to Acceleration Indy. He worked after wrestling practice to work on his speed, ran track for us last year. With work, he’s gotten himself quicker and faster,” Raetz said. “He’s a kid that’s succeeded in everything he’s put his mind to and put his effort toward. I expect more of the same.”
Lough expects himself to succeed as well.
“[Coach Miles] expects me to earn everything I’m given, wants me to work hard, get better and improve so eventually I will get on the field,” Lough said. “I expect to redshirt this first season so I get bigger, faster and stronger. I’ll do whatever I can to get on the field on Saturdays.”
