Labor workers protest Chamber’s right-to-work stance

TERRE HAUTE — About 60 union workers, representing seven different unions, protested this morning in front of the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce while the organization held an educational meeting on right-to-work legislation before the Indiana General Assembly.

“This [legislation] just supports big business and takes money out of the pockets of local families,” said Nick Patterson, a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 157.

“I think the Terre Haute Chamber should have stayed neutral on the issue. They keep saying that right-to-work will bring more business, but you got one big business getting ready to come to Terre Haute and another ready to expand,” Adam Bennett, also a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union, said of recent announcements by NantWorks and ThyssenKrupp Presta.

“There is no right-to-work in the state of Indiana right now, so why do we need it,” he said.

Other union members outside the Chambers’ office along Wabash Avenue represented operating engineers, electrical workers, iron workers, carpenters, laborers and teamsters.
