INDIANAPOLIS —
Hundreds of union members are at the Indiana Statehouse for the start of the Legislature’s new session and its upcoming debate over a Republican-backed “right-to-work” proposal.
The crowd of protesters could also test new security rules that limit the number of Statehouse visitors to about 1,300 people.
United Auto Workers member Bruce Duncan of Kokomo says he believes the limits are ridiculous and are aimed at limiting public protests.
The Indiana House and Senate are scheduled to meet this afternoon. One of the first bills that legislative committees will take up this week would ban labor contracts that require employees to pay union fees.
State police Capt. Dave Bursten says there has been no trouble with protesters and that the crowd at midmorning is well short of the capacity limit.
