INDIANAPOLIS — The Democrat-led Indiana House has approved a new state budget that now heads to the Republican-ruled Senate for a major overhaul.
Republican leaders in the Senate hope to outline their budget proposal Friday, and changes could be made to the House budget that same day. The Senate will likely revamp the spending plan to be closer to a budget proposed by Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels.
The House voted 52-48 today to approve a one-year budget Democrats said would increase state spending on schools by 2 percent and boost funding for higher education. Outnumbered House Republicans said the proposal spends too much money.
