Indiana unions say they have little to lose

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana’s public labor unions say they have little left to lose even if the results of Wisconsin’s recall election inspire Hoosier lawmakers to push anti-union legislation even further.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker survived a recall election Tuesday triggered by laws restricting public employees’ collective bargaining rights.

The Indianapolis Star reports Gov. Mitch Daniels stripped state employees of collective bargaining rights in 2005.

And this year, Indiana’s unions were stung when Daniels signed a new right-to-work law and lawmakers moved to restrict teachers’ contracts to salaries and wages.

Indiana State Teachers Association spokesman Mark Shoup says there’s not much left for lawmakers to take away from unions.

But Central Indiana Labor Council president Brett Voorhies says he’s afraid lawmakers may take bargaining rights away from other public employees.
