Indy northside I-465 highway bridge set for summer closure

INDIANAPOLIS — Traffic will be snarled more than usual this summer on the north side of Indianapolis as construction crews replace a highway bridge for a major city street.

The state highway department will close the Allisonville Road bridge over Interstate 465 on Wednesday, giving the contractor until mid-September to build the new bridge.

State officials say ramps to and from I-465 near Castleton Square Mall will remain open during most of the project, but traffic won’t be allowed to cross the bridge. The new bridge will be larger, with three through lanes and two left-turn lanes in each direction.

Highway department spokesman Nathan Riggs tells The Indianapolis Star that the project would take two years to finish without closing the bridge that carries about 50,000 vehicles a day.
