Earthquake simulator at State Fair

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Homeland Security booth at the 2012 Indiana State Fair includes an earthquake simulator.

The IDHS booth is located near the covered bridge, and also includes displays about earthquakes, fire safety, and being ready for emergencies and disasters. IDHS is partnering with the Indiana Geological Survey at Indiana University to present the simulator at the state fair.

“The earthquake simulator provides a safe, yet realistic earthquake experience,” said IDHS Executive Director Joe Wainscott. “It shows the value of being ready for an earthquake, and for any type of disaster or emergency.”

The earthquake simulator provides the intense shaking that can occur during an earthquake, but in a safe atmosphere. Although Indiana has fault lines across the state, the main risk is in southwest Indiana. Seismic zones that are most likely to directly affect this part of the state are the nearby New Madrid Seismic Zone and the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone, which extends into Southwest Indiana.

IDHS’s booth and the earthquake simulator will not be there for the entire state fair. The booth will stay through Sunday, August 12.
