While North Daviess School Corporation students enjoy a summer away from the classroom, members of the administration, faculty, and board are busy preparing the school for 2012-2013.
At their regular meeting Monday night, board members were briefed by Superintendent Robert Bell, and elementary school principal Jodi Berry on a host of issues related to the upcoming school year. Bell advised the Board that optional online registration will open July 23 and on-site registration will take place Aug. 1 and 2 from noon until 7 p.m. at the high school gym.
Berry said the elementary school staff has been working “extremely hard” getting things ready.
“All orders have been placed, all the supplies are in,” she told the board. “The custodial staff has been cleaning the rooms so we’re ahead of the game this year.”
Berry went on the say the theme for the 2012-2013 school years is “Bugs”, an acronym for
“Be Unusually Good Students”.
Grades 4 and 5 will undergo a change in 2012 -2013.
“They will be semi-departmentalized next year,” Berry said. “We’re going to try it and see how it goes and see how it affects our test scores and the overall learning of our kids.”
The change will allow teachers be more specialized in one area according to Berry. Instead of a teacher teaching every subject they will have an area of concentration making it “more like a junior high format. We call it a junior high scatter schedule.”
Berry said the new system will be re-evaluated in May of 2013 and a decision will be made whether to continue or discard it. Berry also told the board that ISTEP scores “have been released and sent home with the students.”
Under personnel, the board passed a resolution approving the resignation of Megan Vieck, art teacher in the high school. Bell and the board expressed disappointment in the loss of Vieck but understood her desire to return home to Vincennes where she plans to teach at Rivet.
Tammy Bryer and Cathy Gingerich were appointed to certified jump start summer school positions.
In addition, the board also adopted a resolution extending the contracts for all administrators for two additional years ending with the 2012-2015 school year. Passage of the resolution extended the contracts of Bell, Jed Jerrells, Dalrymple, Berry, Renee Judy, and Todd Whitlock.
In other business the board, on Bell’s recommendations, adopted resolutions approving the high school handbook, state and federal grants, textbook rental fees, and a bid for dairy products. Bell recommended the board accept the bid from Prairie Farms, pointing out that for the 17th year in a row, Prairie Farms had been the low bidder.
Bell also indicated that the price for milk had actually dropped slightly this year but the gain was offset by a slight increase in the cost of apple juice.
Bell informed the board that the low bidder for bakery products was unable to deliver to the school so bread will have to be rebid.
Breakfast and lunch prices for the coming school year were also approved as follows: elementary breakfast, $1.25; elementary lunch, $1.90 ($.10 increase); breakfast, $1.25; lunch $2.05 ($.05 increase); adult lunch, $2.50; adult breakfast, $1.60.
