TERRE HAUTE —
Some families go out to eat together.
Others like watching their favorite pro sports teams together.
A few become close knit by committing crimes together.
But three generations of the Lemont family — 79-year-old Robert Sr. of Brazil, 50-year-old Robert Jr. of Mansfield and 21-year-old Robert “Trey” III, a member of the U.S. Marine Corps — will try to cross the finish line of a 1-mile foot race together for the first time this morning.
That race would be the men’s version of the Fast Track Mile, the Fourth of July weekend tradition which follows the 8:15 women’s race at 8:30. As usual, it will take place along scenic Wabash Avenue from Fourth Street to Gilbert Park.
“We’re not really out to race,” explained Bob Lemont Sr., a self-employed carpenter who worked at Stran Steel in Terre Haute for 26 years before he retired in 1982. “We just want to do this together.”
Bob Sr. has run in a few of these events before, including back when it was known as the Mayor’s Cup Mile. He’s also participated in long-distance bicycle rides, so his endurance is pretty good for his age.
The 5-foot-7, 153-pound Bob Lemont Sr. said if he were to go all out today, he could probably finish in about 10 minutes. But he might slow his pace a little so that his non-runner son can keep up with him (insert eye wink here).
“I don’t think I’ll have to slow down for my grandson,” he added with a chuckle. “We’re just going to enjoy it and be together.”
Speaking of his grandson, Trey joined the Marines in 2008. Stationed in Hawaii, he’s on leave after serving our country in Afghanistan earlier this year.
Trey Lemont is scheduled to leave Monday to return to Hawaii.
“It’ll probably be a while before we see him again,” Bob Sr. noted.

• Braves signings — The Tribune-Star received word this week that three former Terre Haute South High School athletes signed national letters-of-intent Thursday to play basketball in college next season.
Ike Worrell, who posted per-game averages of 8.6 points and 5.8 rebounds in the 2009-10 season, will play at Oakland City. A 34-percent shooter from 3-point range as a senior, Worrell is listed at 6 feet, 6 inches and 220 pounds.
The 6-3, 185-pound Jacob Tanoos, who averaged 4.5 points and 4 rebounds per contest and converted 25 shots from 3-point territory in 2009-10, will take his talents to Illinois Central Junior College.
Ian McIntyre, a 2009 South graduate, also signed to continue his academic/athletic career at Illinois Central.
• NFL thought — I don’t claim to know whether Michael Vick was involved or not in that June 25 shooting outside a Virginia Beach, Va., nightclub after his 30th birthday party ended.
But it won’t bother me a bit if NFL commissioner Roger Goodell revokes Dog Killer’s reinstatement for what he did that night or for lying about when he left the party.
If you ask me — and nobody who could do anything about it did — Goodell was too nice to Vick by letting him back in the league last year.
Put Vick in a cell with Charles Manson and throw away the key.
To top it off, Vick never was that good of a quarterback anyway. If he never plays in the NFL again, I won’t miss him.

Terre Haute runner sets up race to help Boston
Having competed in the Boston Marathon once before in 2003, 35-year-old Majel Wells of Terre Haute thought she should give it another try in 2013.
“My goal was just to finish and enjoy Boston,” she reflected this week. “I had an injury [runner’s knee] beforehand, so I wasn’t too worried about beating my time from 2003 [4 hours, 10.20 seconds].
“But nobody cares about what your time is at Boston anyway.”
From what I’ve heard over the years, she’s right. Unless you’re a super-serious runner, the Boston Marathon has been more about taking in the atmosphere and having fun than placing in the top 50, although Wells was pleased that she beat her previous time by finishing in 3:55.19 on April 15.
Obviously, her race time wasn’t the most vivid memory that Wells took away from her 2013 Boston experience. -
Former South players to play in Saylor benefit game
I had my first phone conversation with Mike Saylor since mid-February on Thursday and he sounded good.
The former Terre Haute South High School boys basketball coach, who’s been battling cancer this year, has been traveling back and forth to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston for chemotherapy treatments. -

NCAA Division III basketball tournament returns to Rose-Hulman
The last time Rose-Hulman served as host for the NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament, its game was played inside an old World War II airplane hangar.
You “old-timers” should know the building I’m talking about and the matchup wasn’t really that long ago — March 6, 1997, to be exact. -

Book review: Thumbs up for ‘Trophies and Tears’
Now might be too late for giving Christmas presents, but the book “Trophies and Tears: The Story of Evansville and the Aces” is a fascinating read for longtime Indiana basketball fans, particularly those older than 40.
Written by award-winning Kyle Keiderling of Henderson, Nev., and released in hardcover format in mid-December, the 480-page “Trophies and Tears” documents the rich tradition of the University of Evansville men’s basketball program through recent interviews and research of old yearbooks and newspaper/scrapbook clippings.
The book contains many cheery moments — behind-the-scenes details of all five NCAA College Division (now known as Division II) championships won in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s by the Purple Aces and their legendary coach Arad McCutchan — although some of those moments don’t seem so cheery from an Indiana State perspective when the Sycamores found themselves on the losing end of scores. -
