TERRE HAUTE — “Ironic” is the word that first comes to mind when I think about the Indiana State vs. Southeast Missouri State football clash Saturday evening at Cape Girardeau, Mo.
That’s because Tim McGuire will be on the sideline during the game and Lou West won’t.
As reported in Thursday’s Tribune-Star, West will serve his NCAA-mandated one-game suspension for inadvertently allowing an ineligible player to participate in three games last season. Offensive coordinator/associate head coach Blair Hrovat will fill in for West.
The ironic part is that West replaced McGuire, the man ISU let go as its head coach following the 2004 season.
Not ready to leave the coaching profession, McGuire served as defensive coordinator at St. Norbert College in 2005. At SEMO, he’s in his second season as defensive coordinator/inside linebackers coach.
“I’m working for a great guy,” McGuire told me this week. “[SEMO head coach] Tony Samuel is a former teammate of mine at Nebraska [in the 1970s].”
McGuire insists revenge is not a factor as he prepares for this NCAA Football Championship Subdivision matchup.
“That’s history,” he said of his firing from ISU. “It’s a matter of getting these kids ready to play.”
Asked if this is “just another game,” McGuire stressed that’s really all it is.
“We need to win, just like they do,” he said of the 1-1 Redhawks. “Our big thing is to get momentum heading into Ohio Valley Conference play.
“Beating Indiana State would be important to our kids, our coaching staff and our school, just like our victory [over Southwest Baptist] was last week”
Not only is McGuire enjoying his time in Cape Girardeau, where his wife Judy was finally able to move to in June, he’s getting to coach a team that includes his son Paul.
A 2004 graduate of Terre Haute North High School, Paul McGuire played two seasons at Indiana State (one for his father and one for West) before transferring to SEMO in June 2006. After sitting out last season, the 6-foot-4, 325-pound junior has started one game at right tackle and one game at center this season.
Paul thinks he’ll be lining up at center against Indiana State, which starts former North teammate Daniel Millington on the defensive line. He planned to contact Millington along with some of his former ISU teammates to chit-chat this week.
“I’m not going to talk any smack,” Paul McGuire said. “I’m just gonna go out and play my hardest, which I expect them to do as well. It’ll be a real good game, I think.
“Every game is special, but this is going to be a little more special for me because I still know several of the guys on their team.”
Both McGuires mentioned that oldest son/brother Tim McGuire Jr., whom some of you might remember from his time in Terre Haute, is coaching linebackers and tight ends at Cape Central High School in Cape Girardeau.

Terre Haute runner sets up race to help Boston
Having competed in the Boston Marathon once before in 2003, 35-year-old Majel Wells of Terre Haute thought she should give it another try in 2013.
“My goal was just to finish and enjoy Boston,” she reflected this week. “I had an injury [runner’s knee] beforehand, so I wasn’t too worried about beating my time from 2003 [4 hours, 10.20 seconds].
“But nobody cares about what your time is at Boston anyway.”
From what I’ve heard over the years, she’s right. Unless you’re a super-serious runner, the Boston Marathon has been more about taking in the atmosphere and having fun than placing in the top 50, although Wells was pleased that she beat her previous time by finishing in 3:55.19 on April 15.
Obviously, her race time wasn’t the most vivid memory that Wells took away from her 2013 Boston experience. -

The former Terre Haute South High School boys basketball coach, who’s been battling cancer this year, has been traveling back and forth to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston for chemotherapy treatments. -

Book review: Thumbs up for ‘Trophies and Tears’
Now might be too late for giving Christmas presents, but the book “Trophies and Tears: The Story of Evansville and the Aces” is a fascinating read for longtime Indiana basketball fans, particularly those older than 40.
Written by award-winning Kyle Keiderling of Henderson, Nev., and released in hardcover format in mid-December, the 480-page “Trophies and Tears” documents the rich tradition of the University of Evansville men’s basketball program through recent interviews and research of old yearbooks and newspaper/scrapbook clippings.
The book contains many cheery moments — behind-the-scenes details of all five NCAA College Division (now known as Division II) championships won in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s by the Purple Aces and their legendary coach Arad McCutchan — although some of those moments don’t seem so cheery from an Indiana State perspective when the Sycamores found themselves on the losing end of scores. -
