2002
n A performance by the Glenn Miller Orchestra marked the 80th anniversary of the Indiana Theatre, Seventh and Ohio streets.
n Stained Glass Sunday Afternoon featured tours of eight downtown churches and the United Hebrew Congregation Temple.
n The Terre Haute Exchange Club honored Kenny James as its Firefighter of the Year. James had been on the job for more than 33 years without ever missing a shift.
n Amy Borgnini (Terre Haute North), Laura Engle (Terre Haute South) and Erin Byrd (West Vigo) reigned as homecoming queens at the Vigo County high schools.
n Indiana Lt. Gov. Joe Kerman announced the establishment of a regional office of the Indiana Department of Commerce at the Indiana State University School of Technology with Chris Pfaff as director.
n A group of about 75 persons protesting the possible war against Iraq demonstrated on the steps the Terre Haute City Hall.
n George Bakker, field representative for teachers in four area associations for 30 years, announced he would retire at the end of the year.
1987
n Two 10-hour shifts were working to repair the Vigo County Courthouse roofs after three courtrooms had been damaged by heavy rains.
n Carrie Werneke of Terre Haute won the Indiana Senior Women’s Amateur Golf championship at the Delaware Country Club in Muncie.
n The Kiwanis Club honored Patrick R. Ralston, Terre Haute Parks, Recreation and Cemeteries superintendent, with the Handclasp Award for government and public service.
n Commenting, “I just couldn’t give up,” Betty Goodwin, former owner of the Toasty Shop, opened Betty’s Breakfast and Lunch Carry Out at 678 Wabash Ave.
n The headline read, “The Stephens brothers (Amo and Shawn) propel South past North 40-14” in the Vigo County high schools’ cross-town rivalry football game. The coaches were Wayne Stahley (North) and Rod Shafer (South).
n The officers of the Terre Haute Women’s Club were Susan Helman, Sheran Allee, Janet Monk, Renee Newton, and Gwen Metternich. Barbara Alcock was the advisor.
1962
n Twenty-four of the staff at the U.S. Penitentiary south of Terre Haute were put into service as special U.S. marshals at Oxford, Miss., where James Meredith, the first African-American was attempting to enroll at the University of Mississippi.
n Robert T. Carr was named permanent conductor of the Terre Haute Youth Symphony. He was also the coordinator of music education for the Vigo County School Corp.
n Doubleday Publishing Co. announced the release of “The Art of Syrian Cooking” by Helen Corey, a Terre Haute resident employed in Indianapolis.
n Construction of a pedestrian overpass on North Third street at the Rea School crossing was underway.
n The 46th annual Indiana State College Homecoming parade featured 91 units including the all-male Marching Sycamores band, the Sparkettes, 12 high school bands and 16 organization-sponsored floats.
n Grotto Prophets and their wives from 32 grottos in seven states were meeting in their 15th annual Midwest Grotto Convention in Terre Haute. John W. Whallon of the local Kerman Grotto was the general chairman.

Comic opera, a genre consisting of light hearted musicals, was introduced in Europe during the 17th century.
In the 19th century, several female vocalists from the Wabash Valley, earned national celebrity by using that art form to excel. -
Looking back: In 2003, Storm rips off half of Honey Creek Fire Department’s roof
A Saturday morning storm ripped off half of the Honey Creek Fire Department’s roof and caused heavy damage in Allendale. Wind gusts topping 60 miles an hour brought down power lines and trees throughout the county. Hail almost an inch thick and 1.5 inches of rain fell in less than an hour.

Abundance of shoe stores existed downtown
Spring to me means putting away heavy winter sweaters and bringing out fun lighter sundresses. It also means the possibility of shopping for a new dress or even new shoes.

Genalogy: Handwriting in 1700s-1800s Copperplate or English Round Hand
The primary style of old handwriting in the mid 1700s through the 1800s is sometimes called Copperplate or English Round Hand. This style of writing is much more recognizable and readable than the older Secretary Hand style discussed last week, and it is much less ornate as well.

The lifeless body of Catherine Preston, commonly referred to as “Irish Kate,” was found Saturday morning, Oct. 5, 1895, on a sandbar at the western edge of the Wabash River wagon bridge.

Terre Haute North Vigo High School’s nine-hole record at Hulman Links was broken by golf team member Matt Sherertz who shot a 4-under-par 32 in a team-record win over Northview.
