2002
• The Gathering of the People Pow Wow honored the heritage of the Wea Native Americans, “founding fathers of Terre Haute.” The event was staged at the Vigo County Conservation Club.
• Vigo County teachers Susan Mardis and Susan Newton announced the opening of Set Up to Standards, a tutoring service, in the Corporate Square Annex, 2931 Ohio Boulevard.
• The 15-year-old All-Stars from Terre Haute North won the Babe Ruth League baseball Southwest State championship at Tell City. Brian Fisher was the winning pitcher.
• Terre Haute Police Capt. Richard Erney and Indiana State Police Detective Frank Turchi were presented with W. Kevin Artz Outstanding Police Officer Awards by the Breakfast Optimist Club.
• Charlie Kluesner and Kelli Holloway were the winners of the 15-17 boys and girls divisions of the Terre Haute Junior City Golf championships at Rea Park.
• The cities of Tajimi, Japan, and Terre Haute observed the 40th anniversary of becoming sister cities with officials of both cities taking part in a tree planting ceremony in Fairbanks Park.
1987
• Kimberly Clark, Terre Haute South Vigo High School senior, reigned over the Vigo County Fair. A first-ever parade of 25 units opened the event. The parade was the long-time dream of the late Arnold Herring, a 4-H supporter.
• Donnelley Directory, 666 S. First St., hosted an open house to show its new addition to the main building. This company had expanded its Yellow Pages production from 300 to 510 employees after the divestiture of AT&T. Kevin Hoolehan was the general publishing manager.
• Librarians Alice Wert and Genevieve Reisner announced their retirements from the Vigo County Public Library after giving a total of 47 years of service.
• John Royse, chairman of Merchants National Bank, announced plans to purchase property at 20-32 S. Seventh St. and 710 Ohio St., and to demolish the buildings in the fall.
• Bob Thompson of Isuzu & Honda of Terre Haute, First and Ohio streets, began offering Subaru cars for the first time in the area.
• Joe Everhart’s Valeria Porta Via was now open at 423 Wabash Avenue.
1962
• Ten full-pages of advertising and information announced the grand opening of the Great Scot Supermarket at 11th and Locust streets. A waiting crowd jammed the parking area, brought traffic to a standstill, and people lined up along three sides of the building waiting for the store to open. John R. Holdren, president of Conren Inc., was the owner-operator. Ken Mitchell was the general manager.
• The Terre Haute City Council transferred the administration and control of the 105-acre John G. Dobbs Memorial Grove from the Dobbs Memorial Grove Commission to the Terre Haute Parks Board.
• Paitson Bros. Heating & Air Conditioning, 12th Street and Wabash Avenue, was celebrating 40 years as a leading distributor of Lennox equipment. Jack Paitson was the manager.
• George Robert Allen of Terre Haute was named the resident director-manager of Community Theatre Inc. The appointment was a long-term goal of the organization.
• Gary Ring, Linton Township, won the Vigo County division 4-H tractor contest on the Meadows Center parking lot. David Cooney, Fayette Township, won the junior division.

Looking back: In 2003, Storm rips off half of Honey Creek Fire Department’s roof
A Saturday morning storm ripped off half of the Honey Creek Fire Department’s roof and caused heavy damage in Allendale. Wind gusts topping 60 miles an hour brought down power lines and trees throughout the county. Hail almost an inch thick and 1.5 inches of rain fell in less than an hour.

Spring to me means putting away heavy winter sweaters and bringing out fun lighter sundresses. It also means the possibility of shopping for a new dress or even new shoes.

The primary style of old handwriting in the mid 1700s through the 1800s is sometimes called Copperplate or English Round Hand. This style of writing is much more recognizable and readable than the older Secretary Hand style discussed last week, and it is much less ornate as well.

The lifeless body of Catherine Preston, commonly referred to as “Irish Kate,” was found Saturday morning, Oct. 5, 1895, on a sandbar at the western edge of the Wabash River wagon bridge.

Terre Haute North Vigo High School’s nine-hole record at Hulman Links was broken by golf team member Matt Sherertz who shot a 4-under-par 32 in a team-record win over Northview.
