2002
• Gartland Foundry, 330 Grant St., celebrated its 100th anniversary with recognition of its 85 employees.
• Indiana State University Athletic Director Andrea Meyers was named 2001 Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators.
• The congregation of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, formed in 1835, celebrated the conclusion of its building program with a special afternoon service. The project included a large Fellowship Center and a 500-seat sanctuary.
• The 182 employees of International Paper’s Terre Haute Mill reached 1,000,000 safe work hours.
• Doughmakers Inc. / LaPlante for Representative was the first place winner in the 22nd Altrusa Chili Cook-Off at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds. The Good Time Gang took the individual people’s choice and showmanship awards; the corporate winners of these awards were Cinergy PSI and Century 21.
• The Friends of the Arboretum Inc. celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Clark-Landsbaum Deming Park Holly Arboretum founded by Bill and Marilyn Clark. It was one of 26 arboreta in the world according to the Holly Society of America.
1987
• Allegheny Commuter announced it would discontinue service from Hulman Regional Airport because “people are too willing to drive to Indianapolis rather than to fly there even though air fare is as low as $39 per person.” Trans World Express had stopped its service earlier in the month.
• Local bands showcase talent: The 120 member Terre Haute North Vigo High School marching band, directed by Thomas McCarthy and Bob Kihlken, was in Chicago to participate in the eighth annual Beatrice Music Bowl at Soldier Field. The 108-member Terre Haute South Vigo Band, directed by Steven Humphrey, was at Bush Stadium, Indianapolis, to compete in the 14th Midwestern Marching Band Festival.
• C. Frank Martin, owner of Berry’s Pest Control, was elected national president of the Forty & Eight Society at its national convention in Omaha, Neb.
• Trekkies and Trekkers met at the Signature Inn for Terre Haute’s first-ever Star Trek fan convention. Donna Harvey was the captain of the sponsoring group, a chapter of the international fan organization Starfleet.
1962
• Terre Haute celebrated “Old Fashioned Days” in conjunction with the annual tour of the Indiana Antique Auto Club and the opening of the Early Wheels Museum at 823 Wabash Avenue.
• President Raleigh W. Holmstedt welcomed the record-size freshman class of about 1,800 students. The old Science Building had been completely remodeled as the new home of the Department of Business.
• The Terre Haute Jaycees and the Vigo County Optometric Society (VCOS) began screening tests for children in the elementary schools. Dr. Carl McKee was the Jaycee chair and Dr. Angelo Meneghini the VCOS president. Dr. D. W. Conner Jr. was president of the Western Indiana Optometric Society.
• Willie Wisely won the City Championship Golf Tournament at the Terre Haute Country Club. Warren Artz and Bob Arnett were the runners-up.
• Members of Terre Haute Lodge No. 1009 of the Loyal Order of the Moose celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding with a banquet at Tucker’s Steak House and a dance at the lodge. Harold Smith was the lodge governor.

Historical Perspective: Wabash Valley is home to prominent comedy opera stars
Comic opera, a genre consisting of light hearted musicals, was introduced in Europe during the 17th century.
In the 19th century, several female vocalists from the Wabash Valley, earned national celebrity by using that art form to excel. -
Looking back: In 2003, Storm rips off half of Honey Creek Fire Department’s roof
A Saturday morning storm ripped off half of the Honey Creek Fire Department’s roof and caused heavy damage in Allendale. Wind gusts topping 60 miles an hour brought down power lines and trees throughout the county. Hail almost an inch thick and 1.5 inches of rain fell in less than an hour.

Abundance of shoe stores existed downtown
Spring to me means putting away heavy winter sweaters and bringing out fun lighter sundresses. It also means the possibility of shopping for a new dress or even new shoes.

Genalogy: Handwriting in 1700s-1800s Copperplate or English Round Hand
The primary style of old handwriting in the mid 1700s through the 1800s is sometimes called Copperplate or English Round Hand. This style of writing is much more recognizable and readable than the older Secretary Hand style discussed last week, and it is much less ornate as well.

The death of Irish Kate Preston
The lifeless body of Catherine Preston, commonly referred to as “Irish Kate,” was found Saturday morning, Oct. 5, 1895, on a sandbar at the western edge of the Wabash River wagon bridge.

Terre Haute North Vigo High School’s nine-hole record at Hulman Links was broken by golf team member Matt Sherertz who shot a 4-under-par 32 in a team-record win over Northview.

Query: I live in the Netherlands and recently I have adopted the name of American PFC Joseph P. Nelson at the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten. He was killed in action on Dec. 5, 1944, and his name is on the Walls of the Missing.
