GENEALOGY: ‘Gold Star Honor Role’ preserves biographies of fallen

TERRE HAUTE — During WWI, an organization called the Gold Star Mothers was established by Grace Darling Seibold. Siebold had lost her son, George Vaughn Seibold, in the war and was looking for a way to expend her grief. She created this association for mothers, who, like her, had lost a child in the war.

The organization got its name from the service flag displayed in the windows of households that had a member serving in the war. The little flag—white and bordered in red—had a blue star in its center, which represented the person in service. When a serviceman (or woman, usually a nurse) was killed, the blue star was replaced by a gold star. When mourning for their lost children, the mothers wore black armbands with a gold star affixed.

The book, “Gold Star Honor Roll: A Record of Indiana Men and Women who Died in the Service of the United States and the Allied Nations in the World War, 1914-1918,” is a valuable resource for genealogists. This book is an enumeration of all servicemen and women from Indiana who were killed in WWI. The names are listed alphabetically for each county. But the book is not just a tabulation of names.

Each entry lists the person’s rank, his/her birth date and place of birth, parents’ names, date killed, where killed, cause of death, where interred, plus a short biographical sketch and a photo.

This book can be accessed in several ways. It can be searched on Ancestry at http://search.ancestry.com/ search/db.aspx?dbid=5182. If you have an e-reader, this is a free Google e-book and can be acquired at http:// books.google.com/books/about/Gold_Star_Honor_Roll.html?id=48sMAAAAYAAJ. Or, the entire book can be read on your computer or downloaded and saved as a PDF file at the Allen County Public Library Archive website at http://archive.org/details/goldstarhonorrol00indi.

Over the next weeks, servicemen and women from the Wabash Valley who were killed in WWI will be listed here, starting with Sullivan County.
