HISTORICAL TREASURE: Flashing the mayor's badge

TERRE HAUTE — This mayoral badge was presented to the Vigo County Historical Society by Elizabeth K. Schultz, the granddaughter of Samuel E. Beecher Sr., who served as mayor of Terre Haute from 1936 to 1940.

It is made of a base metal, measures 2.5 inches in height, has an impressive non-precious stone at the base, and reads “Sam E. Beecher, MAYOR, Terre Haute.” Inscribed on the back are the words “Presented to Mayor Beecher by Friends.”

It was manufactured by Biggs Bros. According to the 1940 Terre Haute City Directory, Emerson B. Biggs was a manufacturer of jewelry. His business was at 33 S. Fifth St., in Terre Haute.

Samuel E. Beecher Sr. was a Terre Haute attorney who served as judge in the Superior Court of Vigo County, having built a substantial law practice.

During his administration as mayor, he oversaw the building of a new City Hall and the installation of police radios. His father and son also practiced law in Terre Haute.

Coming from a distinguished family, Samuel E. Beecher Sr. is said to have been well liked and popular in his position.
