LOOKING BACK: 1962: Flu outbreak forces Schulte closed

TERRE HAUTE — 2002

• Homecoming queens at the Vigo County high schools were Laura Sauer (Terre Haute North), Renee Jewel Brandford (Terre Haute South) and Ashley Flowers (West Vigo).

• Dave and Donna Schroeder, new owners of Simrells at 804 S. Seventh St., celebrated their grand opening. They had renovated the site since purchasing it from Glen Jones the previous December.

• First Financial Corp., the holding company for 10 banks including Terre Haute First National, acquired Community Financial Corp. of Olney, Ill.

• Although the local schools did not win the sectional, Terre Haute North Vigo High School coach Brian Heaton said, “This was a great day for Terre Haute swimming.” Together North and South had won 10 of the 12 first places at the IHSAA girls swimming sectional at Bloomington South. Jeff Thompson was the Terre Haute South coach.

• At least 137 individuals picked up application forms to apply for employment on the Terre Haute Police Dept. during the first five days of the hiring process. The starting salary had increased to $30,240 from $13,500 in 1987.

1987

• Bemis Film Division appointed John R. Newman vice president of marketing and Ralph Cutter vice president of sales. The new vice presidents would direct the natonwide marketing and sales functions from the Terre Haute office.

• James C. Spence announced the construction of 500 rental storage units on Indiana 46, one-half mile south of his Village Quarter development.

• Alcan Rolled Products Co. and Aluminum, Brick and Glass Workers Local No. 103 ratified a three-year labor contract just before the old contract expired. Lump-sum payments of about $1,500 were to be made in each of the three years of the contract in lieu of wage increases.

• Arthur W. Lindholm closed his downtown jewelry business at 6591⁄2 Wabash Avenue after 42 years. The building was to be demolished to make space for the new city parking garage.

• David Liston was named vice president and general manager of WTHI radio and Dave Bailey vice president and general manager of WTHI-TV. They replaced Russ Arnold who had retired as general manager of both WTHI radio and television.

1962

• The high incidence of influenza among faculty and students forced the closing of Schulte High School. Absenteeism was also prevalent in the public schools.

• The near 500-acre Paul Kuhn farm, located on east U.S. 40 and remembered for harness racing, was sold to Hulman & Co. Lost Creek Elementary School stood on the northwest corner of the land which was once a part of the farm.

• Wednesday was the 85th semi-annual Dollar Day sponsored by the Retail Merchants Division of the Chamber of Commerce.

• The Vigo County School Corp. board of trustees voted to sell the former Crawford School, Third and Farrington streets, and the Highland School, 1450 Elizabeth Ave.

• B. A. Burdick, plant manager of Stran-Steel Corp., succeeded Wilbur L. Keko as president of the United Fund of Terre Haute.

• The Terre Haute Jaycee Wives Auxiliary brought spring into the Cotillion Room of the Hotel Deming with “A Garden of Fashions” style show and bridge event. Meis Bros. provided the latest Easter styles. Mrs. Jack Cash was the general chairman.
