GENEALOGY: Fighting has been going on for hundreds of years

TERRE HAUTE — America has been at war for the past eight years in Afghanistan and the past six years in Iraq. Some day family historians will be looking up information on the veterans of these wars.

For now, there are 48 other wars, revolts, or rebellions that our ancestors possibly participated in. In the earliest wars, they were fighting for England. After 1783, the were fighting as Americans. The following is a list of these conflicts, many of which were local insurrections, or wars to overcome the Indians. Often, a person participated in these battles as a member of a state militia (what would now be the National Guard). Militia records most often reside with the individual state.
