LOOKING BACK: 1987: Festival celebrates potato harvest

TERRE HAUTE — Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune and Tribune-Star.

2002

• An estimated 80,000 spectators, clear weather, and the exciting stunts put on by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, the U.S. Army Parachute Team-Golden Knights and others made the Air Fair at the Terre Haute International Airport-Hulman Field a huge success. Dennis Dunbar was the show director.

• Chris Cassell won the Golfmasters Mini-City championship. He also had won the Hulman Links Men’s Club championship and had placed second in at the Elks Club earlier in the summer.

• The Seeylville Park was dedicated as the Anna N. Dickerson Park. She had given three acres for this use before her death 85 years ago.

• Katelyn Bishop, Terre Haute South Vigo High School athlete, was named to the 12-girl USA Youth National Team for volleyball. Coach Bryan Payne said, “She’s the only player from Indiana who has made any USA developmental teams this year.”

• Lightning started a fire at the Mattox-Fox Chapel, First and Canal streets in Riley. Damage was estimated at $90,000. Mattox operated five funeral homes in Vigo County and two in Sullivan County.

1987

• Paul Wolf, Terre Haute native and retired Indiana State University baseball coach, was one of four inductees into the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame.

• The Rev. Morris Blade was honored by the 350 members of the Calvary Baptist Church where he had served as pastor for 37 years.

• Operations ceased and work ended for 87 employees at Doxsee Food Corp., 1635 N. 13th St. Excess production capacity and the lack of modern facilities were given as reasons. Borden Inc. had purchased the plant, which produced mayonnaise, mustard, salad dressing and sauces, the year before.

• Mary Fendrich Hulman, John J. Cleary and W. N. Cox retired as directors of Terre Haute First National Bank and First Financial Corp. These three individuals had given 119 years of combined service to the bank.

• Jim Stewart Jr. defeated Dave McCampbell in a playoff for the Elks Amateur Golf Tournament championship at the Elks Country Club.

• A Jaycee-sponsored festival celebrated the potato harvest at Rosedale honoring this vegetable which area farmers grew by the ton.

1962

• “Bon Voyage,” a movie showing at the Grand Theater, was the story of a Terre Haute plumber, played by Fred MacMurray who takes his wife and children on a trip to Europe. MacMurray was given the title of “Honorary Mayor of Terre Haute” and an honorary membership in Plumbers and Steam Fitters Local 157.

• Hood’s Watch Shop, owned and operated by Clarence M. Hood and located at 1256 Maple Ave., was one of the new businesses at 12 Points.

• Southland Shopping Center staged its “First Teen-age Dance” on its parking lot. This free admission event featured Johnny Palmer of WBOW and Joe Badger of WTHI as disc jockeys.

• The city and community joined efforts to eliminate the rat-infested dump at the “Y” east of West Terre Haute between U.S. 40 and Paris Avenue. Efforts by HELP (Housewives for Local Progress) had initiated the “Operation Dump” committee. The property was owned by the Duenweg estate. Gibson dumped on the east bank under a city contract; the west bank was open to free dumping by anyone.
