HISTORICAL TREASURE: Terre Haute’s own Walter Cronkite

TERRE HAUTE — Our Treasure this week is a man who had many talents: a singer, musician, furniture salesman, radio announcer, TV news broadcaster, and public servant. Harry E. Frey was born on Dec. 31, 1913, in Terre Haute to Harry Fred Frye and Maude Callie Isabelle Frey. Little did anyone know that he would become the Dean of Terre Haute TV News Broadcasters.

Harry began his broadcasting career in radio as a singer on WBOW while still a student in Garfield High School. He was a musician from 1932 to 1942, and a radio announcer from 1942 to 1955. Harry made his radio news debut on March 28, 1953, when three railroad cars loaded with military munitions exploded at Lewis, Ind.

From 1955 to 1958 he was in furniture sales and in radio sales and news from 1958 to 1962. He made the transition from radio to TV news on Dec. 17, 1962, serving as WTHI-TV’s main anchor for the 6 p.m. and late newscasts, eventually becoming news director. Everyone liked Harry Frey and the way he presented the news. Fair and non-controversial, he was Terre Haute’s own Walter Cronkite. He dominated the TV airwaves for the next 20 years. His run on TV ended on August 19, 1982.

But Harry wasn’t ready to retire just yet. He worked in public service for 12 years as administrative assistant for Mayor Pete Chalos, retiring in 1994. Active in the community, he was a member of the Downtown Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a past president of the Lions Club and the Elks Club.

Harry was given the Sagamore of the Wabash Valley Award and was inducted into the Indiana Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Wabash Valley Musicians Hall of Fame in 2007. He died on Nov. 30, 2008, at the age of 94 and is buried in Roselawn Memorial Park.

Memories of Harry Frey are included in the Historical Museum’s new exhibit “Tuning in — The History of Radio in Vigo County.”
