2003
• Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology announced it would no longer take part in solar racing competition because of cost and dwindling student interest. The school had been a part of the races since 1990.
• Indiana State University celebrated 100 years of women’s basketball. Former coaches and players returned to the campus for the event at which 15 former players were named to an all-century team.
• Tony Brewer, a volunteer at the Terre Haute Boys and Girls Club, was recognized as volunteer-of-the-month by United Way’s Volunteer Action Center.
• The Vigo County School board approved improvements to the football facilities at Terre Haute North Vigo, Terre Haute South Vigo and West Vigo high schools and construction contracts for three new buildings to replace Franklin, Consolidated and Fayette elementary schools.
• About 7,500 fans came to Hulman Center to hear Toby Keith, the Country Music Association’s 2001 Male Vocalist of the Year.
• Terre Haute North Vigo High School won its first boys swimming sectional in 17 years at Mooresville. Brian Heaton was the coach.
1988
• Bill Biddle succeeded Shelton Hannig as president of Shelton Hannig Inc. and Construction Consultants Inc., 815 Swan St. Hannig remained as board chairman.
• About 40 teachers at Terre Haute South Vigo High School walked an informational picket line after classes. West Vigo High School teachers picketed the next day. The teachers had been working without a contract since Dec. 31, and many felt they were being made to bear the brunt of a $1.5 million over-expenditure by the Vigo County School Corp.
• The Cub Scouts’ 8th annual Pinewood Derby Invitational at The Meadows attracted 150 entries from Illinois and Indiana. Jason Goodwin of Oblong, Ill., was the grand champion.
• Ann Ray, Marg Barnes, Lillian Kincade, Jiles Molter, Paul Wolf and Clyde Nattkemper, all former students at Fairbanks Elementary School, returned to meet the new generation and recall the old days before the building was razed. One question asked: “Where is the paddle?”
• Herm Rassel moved his clothing store from 19 S. Seventh St. to a larger space at 671 Wabash Ave.
1963
• The Gerstmeyer High School basketball team, coached by Howard Sharpe, won 61-51 over State High to win the Western Indiana Conference and Vigo County championships.
• The Indiana State Highway Commission ordered emergency repairs on the Wabash River bridge over U.S. 40 at Terre Haute after an inspection, originally launched by the suggestion of the Tribune. The bridge was carrying an increased volume, about 25,000 vehicles per day, because of the closure for a time of the bridge at Clinton.
• Lewis “Spud” Storms purchased the share of his partner, Bob Utz, and was now the owner and operator of the Bait King store, 116 S. 101⁄2 St.
• The sixth annual Beaux Arts Ball, sponsored by Community Theatre, focused on a “Fujiyama Festival” theme in honor of Terre Haute’s sister city, Tajimi, Japan. Margaret Jane Adamson was chairman of the event held at the Hotel Deming.
• The Terre Haute City Council adopted a special ordinance annexing the third section (80 acres) of Lincolnshire on East Poplar Street.

Comic opera, a genre consisting of light hearted musicals, was introduced in Europe during the 17th century.
In the 19th century, several female vocalists from the Wabash Valley, earned national celebrity by using that art form to excel. -
Looking back: In 2003, Storm rips off half of Honey Creek Fire Department’s roof
A Saturday morning storm ripped off half of the Honey Creek Fire Department’s roof and caused heavy damage in Allendale. Wind gusts topping 60 miles an hour brought down power lines and trees throughout the county. Hail almost an inch thick and 1.5 inches of rain fell in less than an hour.

Abundance of shoe stores existed downtown
Spring to me means putting away heavy winter sweaters and bringing out fun lighter sundresses. It also means the possibility of shopping for a new dress or even new shoes.

Genalogy: Handwriting in 1700s-1800s Copperplate or English Round Hand
The primary style of old handwriting in the mid 1700s through the 1800s is sometimes called Copperplate or English Round Hand. This style of writing is much more recognizable and readable than the older Secretary Hand style discussed last week, and it is much less ornate as well.

The death of Irish Kate Preston
The lifeless body of Catherine Preston, commonly referred to as “Irish Kate,” was found Saturday morning, Oct. 5, 1895, on a sandbar at the western edge of the Wabash River wagon bridge.

Looking back: 2003: Sherertz sets nine-hole school record
Terre Haute North Vigo High School’s nine-hole record at Hulman Links was broken by golf team member Matt Sherertz who shot a 4-under-par 32 in a team-record win over Northview.

Query: I live in the Netherlands and recently I have adopted the name of American PFC Joseph P. Nelson at the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten. He was killed in action on Dec. 5, 1944, and his name is on the Walls of the Missing.

On March 14, 1913, the Indiana General Assembly adopted “On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away,” by Terre Haute native Paul Dresser, as Indiana’s state song.
