2002
• Crowds came to the Vigo County Public Library’s Family Learning Day downtown and the Bleemel Days & Brewfest in the Terre Haute Brewery District. Meanwhile the Ethnic Festival was celebrated at Fairbanks Park.
• Renovation was under way at the former Ames store in Riverside Plaza, U.S. 41 South, to make way for a Burlington Coat Factory store.
• Vigo County Clerk William L. Mansard was named the “Outstanding Clerk of the Circuit Court” by the Association of Indiana Counties Inc.
• David Felstein and Arnie Kosofsky announced their Hillman Jewelers business would close. The 68-year-old business opened its Honey Creek Mall location in 1970.
• Ann Chi, Terre Haute South Vigo High School junior, was one of 24 students in the nation to win the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement.
• Repeat Boutique, a resale consignment store in business for 16 years, moved to the former Dean's Fireworks building at North Third and Locust streets.
• The Good Shepherd Baptist Church, 1200 E. Davis Drive, celebrated its opening with Pastor Thomas E. Hanbeck.
1987
• A free bean lunch on the Vigo County Courthouse lawn celebrated the Samaritan Program’s fifth year of service and its distribution of $1 million worth of food to hungry families. The program was sponsored by the Greater Terre Haute Church Federation and Lifeline with Frank Volkers as project chair.
• Holiday Inn Terre Haute, owned by James E. Dora and managed by Bill Burdine, was selected as one of the top 20 out of the chain’s more than 1,600 facilities worldwide.
• Diners crowded into the Goodie Shop, 666 Ohio St., to eat meals at half-price and admire the completed remodeling project on the restaurant’s 65th anniversary. Chris W. Hayes was the manager.
• Several southside intersections were blocked for nearly five hours after a CSX Transportation boxcar derailed just north of 15th and Hulman streets. The 115-unit train was on its way from Chicago to Nashville, Tenn.
• Johnny Palmer, WTWO-TV news anchor, was the grand marshal of the parade at the 18th Cory Apple Festival. The event was highlighted on “Sunday Today,” an NBC program.
1962
• The Terre Haute business community welcomed Central Nitrogen Inc. as officials broke ground for the new farmer-owned nitrogen fertilizer plant in Otter Creek Township.
• The Terre Haute Symphony Board increased its annual budget from $8,000 to $16,500 to allow for every member of this professional orchestra to be paid a salary.
• Public Service Co. of Indiana Inc. was celebrating its 50th year of electric power service in the state. Two of its five generating stations, the Wabash River and Dresser plants, were located in the Terre Haute area.
• Three hundred or more bridge players were at the Hotel Deming for the fifth annual Terre Haute Sectional Bridge Tournament sponsored by the three local duplicate bridge clubs.
• Retired and active men in the local railroad brotherhoods, representing more than 1,000 years of service, met on the steps of the Eugene V. Debs home, 451 N. Eighth St., to pay tribute to their labor leader and to pledge their assistance in the drive to raise funds for the restoration of the home.

Comic opera, a genre consisting of light hearted musicals, was introduced in Europe during the 17th century.
In the 19th century, several female vocalists from the Wabash Valley, earned national celebrity by using that art form to excel. -
Looking back: In 2003, Storm rips off half of Honey Creek Fire Department’s roof
A Saturday morning storm ripped off half of the Honey Creek Fire Department’s roof and caused heavy damage in Allendale. Wind gusts topping 60 miles an hour brought down power lines and trees throughout the county. Hail almost an inch thick and 1.5 inches of rain fell in less than an hour.

Abundance of shoe stores existed downtown
Spring to me means putting away heavy winter sweaters and bringing out fun lighter sundresses. It also means the possibility of shopping for a new dress or even new shoes.

Genalogy: Handwriting in 1700s-1800s Copperplate or English Round Hand
The primary style of old handwriting in the mid 1700s through the 1800s is sometimes called Copperplate or English Round Hand. This style of writing is much more recognizable and readable than the older Secretary Hand style discussed last week, and it is much less ornate as well.

The death of Irish Kate Preston
The lifeless body of Catherine Preston, commonly referred to as “Irish Kate,” was found Saturday morning, Oct. 5, 1895, on a sandbar at the western edge of the Wabash River wagon bridge.

Terre Haute North Vigo High School’s nine-hole record at Hulman Links was broken by golf team member Matt Sherertz who shot a 4-under-par 32 in a team-record win over Northview.
