GENEALOGY: Virginia Historical Society takes on ambitious project

Over the past few months, the Virginia Historical Society has launched an ambitious project to scrutinize more than 8 million 17th, 18th, and 19th century documents in order to identify the enslaved population of those times. Called “Unknown No Longer: A Database of Virginia Slave Names,” the database is free for the online public to access, and consists of a searchable index leading to actual copies of the scanned documents.

Records digitized for this project include account books, affidavits, agreements, bills of sale, bonds, broadsides, certificates, commonplace books, court records, deeds, emancipation documents, insurance policies, inventories, letters, lists, passes and passports, petitions, receipts, registers, reports, wills, and writs of execution–in short, any document that would list a slaveholder’s property. Searches can consist of the first or last names of slaves or their owners, gender, occupation, time frame, and location. There is also a map of Virginia on which the user can click to browse the records from that particular area.

A search for the first name ”Sarah,” for example, yields 22 hits. These include Sarah Ann, a slave mentioned on an 1832 list from the estate of Abraham J. Cabell, which includes his 28 Florida slaves. A second Sarah can be found in the 1838 inventory of the estate of Richard Booker, as presented to the court of Amelia County, Virginia. Yet another Sarah can be found on the 1865 “List of Negroes belonging to Benjamin Temple and taken by the Yankees.”

A search for a well-known Virginia slaveholder, President Thomas Jefferson, yields an 1813 deed from Jefferson to his grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph of Monticello, Albemarle County, Virginia. On this deed are named the slaves transferred to his grandson–Thurston the son of Isabel, Bec, the daughter of Minerva, and Lewis and Sally, the children of Jenney.

The database can be found at vahistorical.org/. Click on the “Unknown No Longer” picture to enter. Besides the search parameters, the site has a link called “Related Resources” that will take the user off the site to other online projects. A message board allows users to ask questions and seek out others working on the same objectives. As of this month, the database contains 8,000 names. This is a work in progress, so check back often as more information is added.

What can you do next? During this WVGS Education Forum, a webinar will be shown explaining the analytical process of brick wall hurdling. Then participants can discuss their particular brick walls. Hopefully together answers can be found.” To preregister for this educational forum, go to www.inwvgs.org.
