HISTORICAL TREASURE: WBOW introduced some fine Valley talent

TERRE HAUTE — When it first began broadcasting in 1927, station WRPI (Rose Polytechnic Institute) focused on educational programing. With the sale of the station to the Banks of the Wabash Broadcasting Association in 1928, WBOW became a commercial operation and introduced some of the Valley’s finest entertainers.

Among them was the Harmony Four Quartet. Beginning in 1923, Guy Slover, who replaced Jim Lidster as lead; Carl Jones, bass; “Pawnee” Morgan, baritone; and Gus Morgan, tenor, entertained until 1950 and are credited with starting Terre Haute’s first barbershop chorus. The quartet starred on WBOW’s Monkey Club, which aired Saturdays from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. In addition to the Harmony Four, other local talent performed.

Two members of the quartet, Guy Slover and Gene Morgan, inauagurated a comedy act, “Si and Ezra,” which became so popular they got their own radio show and performed together for two decades. They ad-libbed comedy sketches set in Dutton’s footlog, near Brazil. Surviving publicity shots show them performing their routine in costume. Their Lum and Abner style of humor brought “Si and Ezra,” tempting big-time offers, but the boys from Brazil remained in Indiana.

Unfortunately, local radio programs weren’t recorded in those days, so we’ll never hear the Harmony Four or “Si and Ezra.” Fortunately for fans of radio’s golden age, the Vigo County Historical Museum is presenting an exhibit of radios and other memorabilia from that era in its “Tribute to Radio in Vigo County” opening in February.
