HISTORICAL TREASURE: A common feature, but memorable

TERRE HAUTE — As an absolute architecture nerd, I tend to look at buildings noticing the odd ball things such as door hinges and door locks in addition to admiring the overall building. This holds true for the Vigo County Historical Society and its building. Working on exhibit spaces over the winter, I began to take notice of the little things and while not “little,” the fireplaces within the house were grabbing my attention.

At first it was the marble mantle surrounds and decorative metal covers; then the hearth tiles with their different colors and decorative patterns. The hearth tiles are all Italian marble, mauve-brown in color and are used in the changing exhibits room, the gift shop area and also in the upstairs rooms. In the nursery and master bedroom exhibits, bright green tiles are used in a symmetrical pattern surrounded by the mauve-brown tiles. The marble mantle surrounds are all black in color — except the pharmacy exhibit room, which is all white. The decorative metal covers typically matched the color of the mantle surround and were used to cover the “unsightly” grate when not in use during the summer months.

While admiring each fireplace, I realized just how many were present in the house: seven original fireplaces. Now some would think, “it’s just a fireplace”; however, the fireplace was an important feature of Victorian Era homes. Not only was it the source of heat prior to central heating, but also added decorative importance to the interior. For instance, the all-white marble mantle surround in the pharmacy exhibit: When the house was originally constructed, the room was the formal parlor where guests were received and entertained. It is safe to assume this room was beautifully decorated to leave an impression.

Not only do the artifacts housed in the Vigo County Historical Society leave an impression, but the house itself does. On your next visit to the Museum, enjoy the exhibits, but also the features that make up this once grand home.
