LOOKING BACK: 1987: Taste of Terre Haute raises $9K

TERRE HAUTE — Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune and Tribune-Star.

 

2002

• The $2 million renovation of Ryves Hall was called the “Miracle on 14th Street.” Improvements to this youth center, located at 1356 Locust Street and operated by Catholic Charities of Terre Haute, included a new gymnasium, library, preschool, office and meeting space.

• Guille Cox, Michael Tom, Joe Minnis and Gene Shike were the winners in the Vigo County School Board election. Brooks LaPlante (R) was elected state representative over Vern Tincher (D); Tim Skinner (D) defeated Jerry McMullen (R) for state senator.

• Winners in the Wabash Valley sheriffs’ races included John Marvel (Vigo), Johnnie Waterman (Sullivan) and Kim Hawkins (Vermillion).

• Singer Patrick Fortson of Terre Haute, winner of the Wabash Valley Idol contest in October, competed in the American Idol contest in Nashville and advanced to audition in Los Angeles.

• Bob Elsey, former dean of students, was the grand marshal of the Blue and White Homecoming Parade at Indiana State University.

• Richard Stark, Tony Tanoos and Steve Nasser opened Mike’s Stop & Shine at 533 W. Honey Creek Drive just off Indiana 63 South.

1987

• “Meet me at the Oasis” was the theme for the Terre Haute Symphony League style show at Café Oasis, 3495 Hospital Lane, site of the former Golden Steer Restaurant. Barbara Ganley and Anita Loeser co-chaired the event.

• With ticket sales at 735, the sixth annual Taste of Terre Haute at Hulman Center raised $9,000 for the American Heart Association. Jerri Redman, the state association’s Volunteer of the Year, said, “Everyone says this was the best one yet.” Jeff Ault was the event chairman.

• Arnold Arrowood, the new executive director, listed these top priorities for the Terre Haute Area Chamber of Commerce: improving the city’s image, earning accreditation, and moving into a new building.

• “Democrats prevail in city election.” Mayor P. Pete Chalos won his third term by defeating Jerry Jensen. Other winners included Democrats Gary Rider (city judge), Charles Hanley (city clerk), and Gene Frazier, Ray Azar, George Alsop, Brian Conley, Rick Zaikovsky, Louis Joe Duby, Larry Kirchner and Bill Thompson and Republican John S. Newlin for the City Council.

1962

• Sue Stoehr, Honey Creek High School senior, won the Miss Wabash Valley Teenager title and traveled to Dallas to compete in the Miss Teenager of America contest.

• Demolition of substandard properties in Terre Haute’s urban renewal project was about to begin along Second Street between Cruft Street and College Avenue. Construction of public housing units for the aged was proposed for the area.

• A total of 142 area churches sponsored the “Trick or Treat for UNICEF” drive to raise funds for underprivileged children of the world. Mrs. Carol Petzold was the chairman.

• The completely modernized A&P Store, 1612 Wabash Ave., was now open. John Lubbehusen was the manager.

• A joint statement by the presidents of Indiana State College and Union Hospital, Raleigh W. Holmstedt and A. N. Levin, stated that the college would start a new baccalaureate program in September 1963, and the hospital would discontinue its nursing program.

• Sheldon Swope Art Gallery opened a new exhibition, “Sixty Terre Haute Artists,” featuring works by 60 present and former residents of the community.
