HISTORICAL TREASURE: A blast from valentines past

Valentine’s Day — it brings to mind simple paper valentines and the elaborate, fancy store bought cards with multiple verses and glittery covers. While looking for inspiration for this week’s historic treasure, many of these cards appeared before me, each interesting and heartfelt, however my attention was not captured until I came across a very simple, rectangular piece of paper.

Brown with age, but perfectly intact was a Western Union “Valentine Greeting” telegram form. Based upon its decoration, it could date from the 1930s or 1940s and has the usual spaces for the recipient’s name and address, as well as the sender’s information.

What makes this so interesting are the plethora of “suggested text,” appearing on both sides, that you may choose from for the greeting. There are those from a parent to a child, from a child to its mother, friend to friend and of course greetings for the spouse or sweetheart. All sentimental and heartfelt, many rhyme, but there are those that plainly state their affection “devotedly.” I had to chuckle though; printed in bold lettering within a bold box, it states that the word “love” could be added to the greetings for an additional cost. I figure this would be included, but luckily the greetings already expressed this!

Overall, I was taken with this blast from the past because I had thought telegrams were the simplest of shorthand to convey messages and that these wordy greetings were not an option. While valentine cards are still mailed and e-cards are sent by emails, I think the experience of opening the door and having a hand delivered telegram would be pretty special. After all, that is what Valentine’s Day is all about.
