2003
• Official groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the new Fayette, Franklin and Consolidated elementary schools.
• Jim Wiede, Indiana State University’s women’s basketball coach, received the Rawlings Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year Award. Kourtney Mennen was named Prairie Farm Scholar Athlete of the Year; Melanie Boeglin, Terre Haute South Vigo graduate, and Lisa Verhoff were named to the all-freshman team. Mennen and Boeglin were also named to the all-conference team.
• Union Hospital terminated 60 full-time workers as part of a major cost-cutting program. The hospital was also dissolving its partnership with Associated Physicians & Surgeons Clinic. David Doerr was the hospital’s chief executive officer.
n Vigo County officials announced that ThyssenKrupp Presta, a division of ThyssenKrupp AG based in Liechtenstein, was moving into the Vigo County Industrial Park to occupy a building constructed in 1998 by The Wheel Tough Co. The new company would produce automotive steering columns.
• Airport Director Charles Goodwin was leaving Terre Haute International Airport-Hulman Field to accept the position of general manager of Rickenbacker International Airport at Columbus Ohio.
1988
• The 1,476-acre Vigo County Industrial Park south of Terre Haute was one of three sites being considered for a new BASF manufacturing plant.
• Hamilton Center officially opened its new Developmental Disabilities Center, 500 Eighth Avenue. The Children’s Learning Center, housed in the building and serving nearly 300 adults and children with disabilities, was dedicated in memory of James Conover.
• Janice Dukes portrayed the title character in Tennessee Williams’ “Summer and Smoke,” Community Theatre’s fourth production of the season. Manon Beard and Steve Rausch were the directors.
• About 60 Terre Haute South Vigo High School students picketed on the east school yard to let the community know their teachers deserved a contract. The first offer from the administration had been a 0.25 percent salary increase. John Bitzegaio, president of the Vigo County Teachers Association, said this offer was “like a slap in the face—worse than nothing.”
• The Terre Haute Housing Authority conducted a groundbreaking ceremony at 25th Street and Delaware Avenue for the first of 20 new homes for low-to moderate-income families.
1963
• Coach Willard Kehrt and his Garfield High School Purple Eagles were practicing in the Otter Creek gym where the glass backboards were similar to those at the Indiana State College arena in preparation for the regional tournament. Garfield won the regional crown 67-45 over Bloomfield.
• The Indiana Wrecking Co. was razing two buildings constructed in 1883 on the Chauncey Rose Home grounds at 25th Street and Wabash Avenue. They had served as dormitories for the boys and girls at the Chauncey Rose Orphanage.
• Virginia Kruzan substituted for Maggie Daly, a Chicago newspaper columnist, to narrate the Aldens’ style show after Daly canceled out with the flu just before the show. Forty-five fashion changes and 35 models were part of the Newcomers Club Guest Night dinner at the Mayflower Room, Terre Haute House. Reservations numbered 350.
• Sid Levin was the recipient of the “Man of the Year” award from B’nai B’rith.
• Ed Jackman’s One-Stop Car Shop celebrated 37 years in business. First located at 13th and Elm streets, the business had been moved to Lafayette Avenue and Ash Street in 1938.

Comic opera, a genre consisting of light hearted musicals, was introduced in Europe during the 17th century.
In the 19th century, several female vocalists from the Wabash Valley, earned national celebrity by using that art form to excel. -
Looking back: In 2003, Storm rips off half of Honey Creek Fire Department’s roof
A Saturday morning storm ripped off half of the Honey Creek Fire Department’s roof and caused heavy damage in Allendale. Wind gusts topping 60 miles an hour brought down power lines and trees throughout the county. Hail almost an inch thick and 1.5 inches of rain fell in less than an hour.

Abundance of shoe stores existed downtown
Spring to me means putting away heavy winter sweaters and bringing out fun lighter sundresses. It also means the possibility of shopping for a new dress or even new shoes.

Genalogy: Handwriting in 1700s-1800s Copperplate or English Round Hand
The primary style of old handwriting in the mid 1700s through the 1800s is sometimes called Copperplate or English Round Hand. This style of writing is much more recognizable and readable than the older Secretary Hand style discussed last week, and it is much less ornate as well.

The lifeless body of Catherine Preston, commonly referred to as “Irish Kate,” was found Saturday morning, Oct. 5, 1895, on a sandbar at the western edge of the Wabash River wagon bridge.

Terre Haute North Vigo High School’s nine-hole record at Hulman Links was broken by golf team member Matt Sherertz who shot a 4-under-par 32 in a team-record win over Northview.
