GENEALOGY: Jamboree Extension Webinar Series begins Saturday

TERRE HAUTE — I recently received the latest announcement of the Southern California Genealogical Society:

“The Southern California Genealogical Society announces the return of the popular Jamboree Extension Webinar Series, which provides web-based family history and genealogy educational sessions for genealogists around the world.

“Jamboree Extension Series webinars are conducted the first Saturday and third Wednesday of each month. Saturday sessions will be at 1 p.m.; Wednesday sessions at 9 p.m.

Sessions starting in August and going through the end of 2012 include:

• The Genealogist as CSI, presented by George G. Morgan on Saturday. The presentation describes methods of research, evaluation, and the communication process that modern-day genealogists must go through to reach sound conclusions.

• Women’s Work, presented by Gena Philibert-Ortega on Aug. 15. This presentation will examine the occupations and volunteer activities that women of the 19th century held and the records left behind.

• Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker, presented by Denise Spurlock on Sept. 1. This presentation will discuss how your non-farmer ancestors made a living and examine strategies for research.

• Playground Rules for Genealogy on the Internet, presented by Janet Hovorka on Sept. 19. Three fundamental rules to follow when meeting distant relatives on the Internet and doing Internet research.

• Hark! That Tombstone is Talking to Me! Presented by Linda Woodward Geiger, CG, Oct. 6. “You CAN get blood from a stone. Learn about wringing the tombstone dry and learning more about your ancestors.”

• Family History Writing Made Easier: Cloud-based Tools Every Genealogist Can Use, presented by Lisa A. Alzo on Oct. 17. “Telling your family’s story just got a whole lot easier thanks to a number of cloud-based note-taking and writing tools and apps you can access from home, your netbook or iPad, and even your smartphone. Learn about the latest tech tools and writing apps for bringing your family’s story to life!”

• Thanksgiving Special: Online Resources for Colonial America, presented by D. Joshua Taylor on Nov. 3. This presentation explores online resources for researching your colonial ancestors. It also instructs the viewer on how to use Early American Imprints and JSTOR.

• Sharing and Preserving Memories in a Digital Era, presented by Daniel Horowitz on Dec. 1. This presentation explores the tools of the digital age.

• Jewish Genealogy 101, presented by Schelly Talalay Dardashti on Nov. 19. “Learn the fundamentals of researching your Jewish ancestors.”

These live webcasts are offered for free and are open to the public on the date and time specified. Members of the SCGS can view archived presentations of the webcasts at any time on the members-only portion of their website.
