GENEALOGY: A new year’s resolution for genealogy

TERRE HAUTE — Well, we’re into the new year of 2011. Let’s make a genealogy resolution. Genealogy has given much to us, so let’s give something back this year. Below are listed the addresses, websites and phone numbers of all the genealogy libraries and societies in the Wabash Valley. You may be a member of one or more. You may have used one or more of the libraries. Now think about giving back. If you have an ancestor from one or more of these counties, think of joining that county’s genealogical society or make a donation to their library.

And if you haven’t been to these libraries, resolve to visit one or more. Because if you are just doing your research on the Internet, you are missing out on valuable local information as well as the experience of doing on-site research.

For instance, I’m a member of the Clay County Genealogical Society. They have one of the best Society libraries around, containing information that can’t be found on Ancestry.com, but they struggle to keep their doors open. They would like new members or even a cash donation. We want libraries like this to remain open, but they need funds to keep a roof over their collections and the furnace running.

Please take the time to visit these websites and then actually visit the libraries, make a donation, join the societies.
