LOOKING BACK: 2001: Northview Knights won the Pizza Hut Classic

TERRE HAUTE — Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune and Tribune-Star.

 

2001

• The Terre Haute firefighters erected 343 crosses at the corner of Ninth and Ohio streets to honor the New York City firefighters who lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

• The most popular toys of the season, including the Karaoke Barbie, Microsoft X-Box and Nintendo GameCube, were sold out before Christmas at local stores.

• Indiana 63 was closed after an explosion at a Graham Grain Co. storage building located north of Margaret Avenue. Considerable damage occurred in the older parts of the structure, but no injuries were reported. Dick Smith was the company president.

• The Northview Knights won the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic defeating Turkey Run 85-54. Host team Terre Haute North Vigo placed third. This high school basketball tournament, in its second year, was a revival of the Wabash Valley Tournament played from 1916 through 1972.

• Terre Haute reported nine homicides during the 2001 year, the highest for the city in the past 25 years. The Vigo County Drug Task Force had raided 87 meth labs during the year.

1986

• Terre Haute South Vigo High School’s “Big Band of Braves” with an entourage of 103 musicians, director and escorts, were in Jacksonville, Fla., to perform in the annual Gator Bowl Classic parade. The Braves, directed by Steven Humphrey, were one of 23 bands from across the nation to be featured. The South Vigo Music Boosters had raised about $40,000 for the trip.

• Tribune-Star employees delivered holiday food baskets to 400 families in the Terre Haute area. The fund had passed the $12,000 goal.

• The Vigo County school board approved an appropriation of $5.2 million for the construction of a new school on the Davis Park site at 19th and Poplar streets.

• Jack Ennis was chosen to fill the vacant seat on the Vigo County Sheriff’s Merit Board. He replaced Paul Dowell who had resigned to take a job out of town.

• Paul Lockhart, Vigo County school board president, earned a “gold star.” He had attended every one of the 23 regular meetings and three special meetings during the year.

• Three-hour skating sessions were offered Dec. 24 and 25 at the Trianon Ice Palace, 29th Street and Wabash Avenue. Admission was 75 cents for an adult and 50 cents for a child,  with rental skates available.

• McDonald’s Seventh and Poplar streets, recognized its 22-member all-male staff with individual photos, names and schools in its Christmas advertisement. Ron McKnight was the manager. The All-American Meal of a hamburger, milk shake and French fries was listed at 45 cents.

• Larry Sawyer was named editor of the Terre Haute Star.

• Granville O. Cooley was installed as the new monarch at the Kerman Grotto in ceremonies at the Grotto Home on North Eighth Street.

• An article in the Indiana Publisher, a publication of the Hoosier State Press Assoc., read, “If a gold medal is awarded to the newspaper in the nation that put on the most effective and unique observance of National Newspaperboy Day, the honor will undoubtedly go to the Terre Haute Tribune.” The newspaper had featured a 1939 photo of the carriers.
