GENEALOGY: Queries: Capps, Herod, Butcher, Werts, Vowell families

TERRE HAUTE — This week, we have several queries:

• I’m researching the family of Enoch R. Capps, born 1837 in North Carolina. He moved to Vermillion County, Indiana, about 1868. Enoch and Mary Good were married in Vermillion County on July 23, 1865, and raised 14 children. Some of the children moved to Kansas and Wahington. I am interested in more information on the children who remained in the Midwest. I would appreciate hearing from anyone else researching this family. Please contact me at alicemgrenier@q.com or Alice Grenier, 1520 91st St. E., Tacoma, WA 98445.

• I am looking for any information for the Herod Family in Putnam County, Indiana. Catherine Herod was married to Jeremiah M. D. Cox in Pendleton County, Kentucky, and came to Putnam County about 1833-34 along with her brother John Hart Herod. John Hart Herod was married to Mary (Polly) King in Putnam County in 1834. Catherine and John Herod’s parents were Bailey and Sarah (Hart) Herod. I am actually looking for information on Bailey and Sarah (Hart) Herod and having a difficult time. I’m interested in finding anyone researching this family that might have more information. There are several Herod/Harrod families in the Pendleton County, Kentucky, area and I am trying to connect to one of them. Would anyone in the Putnam County area be able to help me? I would really appreciate it! Please contact Kelly Thaman at email kelcandy@sbcglobal.net.

• I have two queries. (1) I’m trying to find out when Mort Butcher died, probably in Putnam County, Indiana. He was listed on the 1920 federal census, but I can’t find him in 1930. He’s usually listed as Mort L. Butcher, but I’ve also seen him listed as Morton Oliver Butcher. He married first to Alice Carrie Flinn (1884), later divorced, and married second to Dollie Earp, around 1893. Mort was the son of James H. Butcher and Julia (Earp) Butcher. (2) I’m also trying to find information about the children of Elzephus Butcher and Ellen (Rambo) Butcher of Putnam County, Indiana. They had the following children: Amanda (married James F. Shonkwiler), Ira (married Ellen Robertson), Armilda (married Joseph Newgent), Milton Coburn (married Cora Dryden), Columbus (nothing known about him), and Richard (nothing known about him).

Any information appreciated. Thanks! Michael Van Baaren at email van_baaren@hotmail.com.

• Jesse Swisher married Barbary Jane Werts on October 8, 1800, in Adams County, Pennsylvania. She was born about December, 28, 1778, in Adams County, Pennsylvania, and died about January, 8, 1839, in Putnam County, Indiana. Can anyone connect to this family? If so, please contact Jonathan Wert at email jwert@

mdi-wert.com.

• Seeking a copy of Putnam County, Indiana, Deed Record I, p 394, dated February 1, 1841. This document is regarding estate of Manpage Vowell. Also, interested in any other probate records associated with him. I am tracing this Vowell family for the Vowell DNA Project. Please contact me here or at willhendricks@comcast.net. Thank you. Will Hendricks, Chattanooga, Tennessee.

George Coble was born in 1812 in Pennsylvania and died in 1877 in Parke County, Indiana. I think he could have had a brother named Joseph. Any information about this Coble family would be appreciated. Please contact Jannine Gregory at email jgregory8@

austin.rr.com.

If you have a query you would like posted in this column, please email me at tamszion@gmail.com, or sent it to the Tribune-Star, P.O. Box 149, Terre Haute, IN 47808.
