LOOKING BACK: 1999: Public designs sought for best representation of state for Indiana quarter

Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune and Tribune-Star.

1999

n State officials were to oversee the cleanup of nearly 74,000 tires stacked along Otter Creek in northeastern Vigo County. Jack Roetker, Vigo County Health Department administrative assistant, said his department had tried since 1983 to have the site cleaned up.

n The former gas station at 2900 Wabash Ave. was moved to Art Nehf Field at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Bill Eccles, a Rose-Hulman professor, and his wife Trish paid for the move through a designated gift to the school.

n The top four banks ranked by number of ATM machines in the Wabash Valley were Terre Haute First National, with 62, Merchants National Bank, 18, Civitas Bank, 13, and First Bank & Trust, 8.

n Judy Bush, principal of Terre Haute North Vigo High School, resigned to become superintendent of Attica Consolidated School Corp.

n The public was invited to submit designs to best represent Indiana when its U.S. quarter would be minted in 2002.

n Fire consumed part of the Futurex Industries plant in the Vigo County Industrial Park off U.S. 41 South.

1984

n Kevin Nunn and Maurice Miller, The 13th Street Boys, appeared on WTTV-TV’s “Jim Gerard Show” to perform their breakdance routine.

n William H. Ray succeeded Ross Hedges as executive director of the Terre Haute Area Chamber of Commerce.

n The Wabash Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America, received a house and one-half acre of land from Robert and Joanna Pease at the entrance of its Camp Wildwood northeast of Terre Haute,.

n The Vigo County School Board increased school lunch prices a nickel – up to 95 cents for elementary students and $1 for junior high and high school students. Participation had increased from 58 percent to more than 70 percent over the past few years, but the program was unable to recover meal costs. Mary Perucca was the food service director.

n More than two months after county health officials ordered Indiana-American Water Co., 234 S. Eighth St., to fluoridate local water supplies, the company was still awaiting word from corporate attorneys on the order’s legality.

n David Fuller was named principal of Fairbanks Elementary School.

1959

n The Vigo County Fair attracted approximately 22,000 paid admissions during its first three days. In addition to USAC car races, three harness races and two running races were run during the event. Delbert Smith, president of the Indiana Trotting and Pacing Association, said, “Terre Haute has the best harness racing track in the state.” Eight horses could run abreast here, where only six could do so at all the other fairgrounds.

n A 30-inch natural gas pipeline was laid under the bottom of the Wabash River about one mile south of the Dresser Power Plant. It was part of a line being constructed from New Orleans to Joliet, Ill.

n The Vigo County Area Planning Commission, dedicated to the orderly growth of the county, held its initial meeting. County Commissioner Harry F. Brentlinger Jr. was elected president of the new group, formed after more than three years of consideration of the program.

n Bruce Kasameyer won the City Junior Golf crown and Dick Sebring took the boys championship at Rea Park.
