HISTORICAL TREASURE: Rocking horse would have thrilled any child on Christmas morning in 1900s

TERRE HAUTE — The antique rocking horse pictured above is the centerpiece for the holiday exhibit “Through the Eyes of a Child” at the Vigo County Historical Museum. Placed beside a decorated Christmas tree, it is a charming remembrance of holidays of the past.

On loan to the museum from Judy Lowe, the rocking horse has been in her parents’, the Dr. Joseph C. Minnis II family, home for nearly 100 years. Standing on a red painted wooden platform with bow rockers, the horse is covered with real horse hair. It is wearing a gray wool pad under a brown leather saddle with stirrups. The brown leather bridle and reins complete the look. This beautiful rocking horse would have thrilled any child on a Christmas morning in the early-1900s.

The origin of the rocking horse goes back to the first half of the 19th century in Britain. London’s rocking horse makers led the world and the capital’s dapple gray rocking horses (the favorite of Queen Victoria) were the overwhelming favorites of Victorian English children. It was, however, an American designer who changed the design from bow rockers. In 1877, P.J. Marqua of Cincinnati, Ohio, patented the safety stand which became the preferred form.

There is still time to see the vintage rocking horse and the Historical Museum’s toy exhibit. The museum will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 27 to 30.
