2002
• Sen Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) was in Vermillion County to announce that the storage of the deadly nerve agent VX was to be neutralized by April, 2004, and the land then would be available for development.
• The YWCA received a $1 million gift for building expansion from the estate of Ralph G. and Mary Barkley. It was the largest gift ever received by the association.
• Gene Lowe, principal of West Vigo Middle School, and Christi Fenton, DeVaney Elementary School principal, were chosen to be honored by the Indiana Association of School Principals, District 8.
• Arts Illiana, 630 Wabash Ave., featured the work of Paul Bennett, Honey Creek Middle School sixth- grader, in its first solo student exhibition.
• The Terre Haute City Council annexed the property on which the new federal prison was being constructed south of the city. It was scheduled for completion in 2004.
• Joel Robson, Terre Haute North Vigo High School senior, won the Earl Wood Memorial Greater Terre Haute Singles Tennis Championship at Rea Park. Dr. Scott Ackley was the runner-up.
1987
• Bev Cristee, Rebecca Johnson and Dan Hicks announced the opening of The Chase Restaurant at 810 Wabash Avenue, the location of the former Office Tavern.
• Mothers Benedicta, Apolinaria and Gabriella, formerly of Romania, reopened St. Andrew Roumanian Orthodox Church, 1313 N. 25th St. Members of St. George Orthodox Church helped with the renovation work.
• Jerry Dooley succeeded William Giermak as administrator of Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
• The Wilderness Shop, 2315 Margaret Ave., sponsored a six-hour seminar at Hulman Center on white-tailed deer hunting.
• CF Industries on U.S. 41 North announced it would stop manufacturing operations and become a terminal for liquid fertilizer and a warehouse. The workforce had numbered 115 in 1986 before the series of layoffs began.
• Members of the Terre Haute Chapter of the NAACP met to discuss the resurgence of local Ku Klux Klan activity
• Terre Haute Miss Softball America Senior Division All-Stars were the champions of a tournament in Logan, W. Va. Mike Barnes and Larry Wilson were the coaches; Judy Barnes was the manager.
1962
• Plans for two additions representing an investment of millions of dollars at the Vigo Plant were announced by Chas. Pfizer & Co. The additions were to house the production of Sabin oral vaccine and other vaccines as needed.
• The United Fund campaign committee developed a new approach to fund-raising by forming a “Loaned Executive Team” headed by John K. Lemry, Columbia Records plant manager.
• The 1962 Vigo County Fair opened with USAC sprint car races at the Action Track. Also featured were an All-Western Horse Show, harness and running races, wrestling, auto daredevils, the Air Force Thunderbirds, and Charlie Weaver in person. Ray Graham was the fair general manager; Darrell “Tiny” Hayworth was the grounds superintendent.
• The Hereford entry of Doyle Stephens, Lost Creek Township, was judged grand champion in the 4-H beef show. The reserve grand champion title was won by the Black Angus steer of Cheryl Scamihorn, Pierson Township.
• Les Kresge defeated Frank Kaperak for the Junior Golf championship at Rea Park. Bill Gilmore took the boys division championship.

Comic opera, a genre consisting of light hearted musicals, was introduced in Europe during the 17th century.
In the 19th century, several female vocalists from the Wabash Valley, earned national celebrity by using that art form to excel. -
Looking back: In 2003, Storm rips off half of Honey Creek Fire Department’s roof
A Saturday morning storm ripped off half of the Honey Creek Fire Department’s roof and caused heavy damage in Allendale. Wind gusts topping 60 miles an hour brought down power lines and trees throughout the county. Hail almost an inch thick and 1.5 inches of rain fell in less than an hour.

Abundance of shoe stores existed downtown
Spring to me means putting away heavy winter sweaters and bringing out fun lighter sundresses. It also means the possibility of shopping for a new dress or even new shoes.

Genalogy: Handwriting in 1700s-1800s Copperplate or English Round Hand
The primary style of old handwriting in the mid 1700s through the 1800s is sometimes called Copperplate or English Round Hand. This style of writing is much more recognizable and readable than the older Secretary Hand style discussed last week, and it is much less ornate as well.

The death of Irish Kate Preston
The lifeless body of Catherine Preston, commonly referred to as “Irish Kate,” was found Saturday morning, Oct. 5, 1895, on a sandbar at the western edge of the Wabash River wagon bridge.

Terre Haute North Vigo High School’s nine-hole record at Hulman Links was broken by golf team member Matt Sherertz who shot a 4-under-par 32 in a team-record win over Northview.
