HISTORICAL TREASURE: Harmonious history

In 1923, a group of singers calling themselves the Harmony Four entertained regularly over the radio and at civic and various club events. They were Marion Hollingsworth, pianist for the solo numbers; Pawnee Morgan, baritone; his brother, Gene Morgan, tenor; Guy Slover, lead; and Carl Jones, bass. The radio station was WRPI of Rose Polytechnic Institute which later became WBOW. Jim Lidster was the original member of the Harmony Four. Guy Slover took his place in 1923.

The original four members of the Harmony Four were from Brazil. Called the Monkey Club, they would broadcast every Saturday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. They went on to make a nightly 15-minute presentation, becoming so popular that it continued for 30 years. There was no written material, but all Hoosier homespun humor.

The Harmony Four was known nationally and was invited by radio station KYW in Philadelphia. They were also invited to appear at the White House by both presidents Herbert Hoover and Calvin Coolidge. The group appeared on radio all over the country. In the early 1930s, the Harmony Four formed the Elks Chanters, a large singing group of Elks Lodge members. During World War II, the Chanters entertained service men in Army hospitals all over the country.

The Harmony Four entertained until the death of Pawnee Morgan in 1950. The group later formed the first Barbershop Chorus in Terre Haute. Guy Slover’s daughter, Carmen, was a first member of the local Female Barbershop Quartet. The Harmony Four and the Barbershop Chorus entertained both in Terre Haute and throughout the United States for many years.

The photograph came from the former Saturday Spectator on Jan. 11, 1975, which may be found in the Vigo County Historical Society’s archives.
