HISTORICAL TREASURE: Memories of a volunteer

I have been volunteering at the Historical Museum since 1985. Being a history buff, I toured the museum the first month after our family moved to Terre Haute. I spotted the child’s autoharp and mentioned to Dave Buchanan, the director, that I was an autoharpist — presto — my first Historical Treasure.

In October that year, I was asked to help with the third grade tours. That was the first of many tours through the 25 years I was able to negotiate the steps. The children were eager to see what was in each room and many brought their families back to the museum to show what they had learned.

As a weekly hostess, I have the privilege of meeting people from all over the world. Many visitors ask if we really have Stiffy living in the Museum. Yes, he lives at the museum and is at the center of our haunted legends of Terre Haute.

This year, the Vigo County Historical Society celebrates 90 years of collecting, preserving, and presenting local history. A new exhibit is being mounted to show some of the people and events that have filled those 90 years.

One portion of the exhibit highlights programs done by the Society. A large photograph reminds me of riding on the “stage coach” during the three R’s presentation that brought the River, the Road, and the Railroads to the third graders in Vigo County for 10 years.

Another area brings back memories of the many summer celebration productions and Civil War events I enjoyed both working at and attending.

Come in and see what memories this exhibit brings to you. Join us as we celebrate the past and plan for the future.
