LOOKING BACK: 1987: ‘Effort to fluoridate’ Terre Haute a big issue

TERRE HAUTE — Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune and Tribune-Star.

 

2002

• Some 600 persons, including 100 Vigo County employees, participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Vigo County annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake at Vigo Bowl. Deanna Smiley Gulliford was the executive director.

• It was a winning night for girls basketball in the Wabash Valley. The Terre Haute South Vigo Braves won the Class 4A semistate over Ben Davis and the Class A No. 1 ranked North Vermillion Falcons defeated Loogootee.

• U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh visited Ryves Hall Youth Center to promote the Charity Aid, Recovery and Employment Act which included support for faith-based charities.

• The Greater Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce announced its 2002 board with Patrick Cahill, president of Wabash Valley Asphalt, as chairman and G. Rod Henry as president. Vice presidents included Louis Britton, Ron O’Day, Paul Thrift, John Lukens, Thomas Dinkel and David Doerr.

• U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar visited Terre Haute South Vigo High School to support the students’ involvement in the nationwide Veterans’ History Project. Jim Mann was chair of the social studies department.

1987

• William Drummy, M.D., Vigo County’s health officer, wrote, “The effort to fluoridate Terre Haute’s water supply is a No. 1 issue now, just as it was in 1983 when I began this job.”

• Larry Bird, Max Gibson, Glen Ankney and Tom Clarey purchased the Sheraton Inn, 555 S. Third St., with plans to convert the building into the area’s first sports-theme motel.

• Linda Godfrey, chairperson of the Beautification Committee of the Terre Haute Area Chamber of Commerce, announced plans for banners to be attached to every third streetlight pole along Wabash Avenue from Third to 10th streets – 34 sets in all.

• Merchants National Bank took a 60-day option on the former Meis building, 624-636 Wabash Ave., with the possibility of constructing a multi-story bank building on the site.

• Tony McGee and Jason Sibley of the Terre Haute Boys Club were the winners in their age groups at the regional Optimist Tri-Star basketball contest at Roachdale.

• Harold “Hap” Harris, West Terre Haute police chief, retired after serving 17 years on the force.

1962

• Central Nitrogen Inc. announced plans to construct a $20 million industrial facility north of Terre Haute to produce nitrogen fertilizer to supply farmers in Indiana, Illinois and Ohio.

• The Kroger store in the Meadows Shopping Center, managed by Sherman Hunt, was honored as the “store of the week” by the Kroger Co. for its outstanding sales performance.

• First services were held in the newly constructed Christus Victor Lutheran Church located north on old U.S. 41 at the intersection of the new U.S. 41 bypass. The congregation had held its first meeting on Sept. 17, 1959, at the Otter Creek Men’s Club.

• Dr. James W. Barnes, conductor of the Terre Haute Symphony and Indiana State College professor, was named to organize the new Terre Haute Youth Symphony and serve as its temporary conductor. Formation of this musical group was authorized by a city ordinance several months before.

• Wallace H. Grosbach, new potentate of the Zorah Shrine, and his wife were honored at the Potentate’s Ball at the Shrine Temple.
