GENEALOGY: Indiana State Library offers several genealogy events

TERRE HAUTE — This month is Family History Month at the Indiana State Library in downtown Indianapolis. The ISL invites Hoosiers to attend the events that it has in store for family historians and genealogists all over the state. Upcoming events include:

n Tuesday, 2 to 3 p.m., in the History Reference Room, Amy Summer will cover Newspapers in Genealogy: “The State Library has the world’s largest collection of Indiana newspapers. Learn tips and tricks for getting the most out of our newspaper collection for your genealogy research.”

n Oct. 11, 5:30-6:30 p.m., in the History Reference Room, Daina Bohr will present The ISL, More Than Just Indiana: “This program describes the materials in our collection that are for other states, including examples of the types of materials we have for the different states: Books, CD-ROMs, microfiche, databases, etc.”

n Oct. 16, 2 to 3 p.m., in the Indiana Authors Room, Katie Springer will discuss Census Questionnaires, 1870-2010: “How has the U.S. Census questionnaire developed from 1870 into what it is today? In the 150 years between then and now, the number of questions asked in the census has grown to over 60 (1980-2000) and shrunk back down to 10 (in 2010). Learn the Whats, Hows, and Whys and develop your own queries while viewing original census documents from this time period.”

n Oct. 23, 11 a.m. to noon, in the Indiana Authors Room, Stephanie Gowler will present Preservation of Photographs and Albums: “Photographs are some of our most treasured family heirlooms and play in an important role in family history research. This program will highlight the preservation challenges of caring for historic photographs and albums and offer tips for creating your own archival scrapbooks.”

n Oct. 23, 1 to 2 p.m., in the Indiana Authors Room, Mark Vopelak will discuss Jean Jacques DuFour, America’s First Successful Winemaker: “A resident of Canton du Vaud, Switzerland in 1796, Jean Jacques DuFour and several other Swiss families immigrated to America in search of land to start a vineyard. His travels brought him to Vevay, [Switzerland County] Indiana, where he established the country’s first successful winery. Join us to learn more about these early Swiss immigrants.”

n Oct. 25, 5:30-6:30 p.m., History Reference Room, Leigh Anne Johnson will present Beginning Genealogy, Part 2: “Learn the many types of resources at the Indiana State Library that will help you with your family history research. Examples are books, CD-ROM’s, microforms, pamphlet files, etc.”

n Oct. 29, 10 to 11 a.m., in the History Reference Room, Charles Hill will discuss Clues to Researching the 1940 Census: “The program on the 1940 census will describe how to search the 1940 census, what types of information are included in this census and how it compares to other census years for genealogy searching.”

In addition, DAR members will be present in the Library each Wednesday (Oct. 10, 17, 24, 31), from 1 to 3 p.m., to help individuals complete their DAR applications.

The ISL is also offering tours of their facilities on Oct. 10, 16, 18, 22, and 31, Nov. 1 and 13, and Dec. 6 and 18, registration required. All tours will last from 9:30 to 11 a.m. For more information visit www.in.gov/library/
