Looking Back, June 24, 2012: 1962: Mayor honored in sister city Tajimi, Japan

TERRE HAUTE — 2002

• Trevis Mayfield, Tribune-Star publisher, announced that a new press facility would be constructed on Margaret Drive near Indiana 46. Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., the newspaper’s parent company, was asking for bids from contractors.

• Ivy Tech-Wabash Valley Region received $1 million from the estate of Ralph G. and Mary Barkley, former owners of B-A Inc., an electrical contracting company. This was the largest gift ever received by the Ivy Tech Foundation and would allow the local Ivy Tech to almost double the amount of scholarship money available.

• Spyglass Investment Management Corp. moved from 4312 S. Seventh St. to 1205 S. Third St. Joel Harbaugh was the firm president.

• The Terre Haute Exchange Club received top honors in its Indiana District for its increase in membership and outstanding activities. Joyce Lindley was succeeding Dale Long as president.

• Julie Young, executive director of the Volunteer Action Center since 1988, retired. The Center, now under the United Way umbrella, was to be headed by Vicki Roberts.

1987

• Garry Wright was chair of the Lions Club’s 17th annual Summer Festival at Riley.

• Ceremonies at Fairbanks Park opened a full-weekend of regional competition in the White River Park State games. Nila Armstrong and Rita Coleman, Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Dept. staff members, worked with the local games committee.

• Sue Storckman and members of the Evansville North Club were responsible for efforts to organize a new Civitan Club in Terre Haute.

• Penny Koob directed “Another Opening, Another Show — A Salute to Broadway’s Musicals,” the Vigo County Historical Society’s annual fund raiser.

• Richard A. Zaikovsky was appointed to replace Rose O’Neal Dixon who had resigned from her Terre Haute City Council (6th District) position.

• The songs of Paul Dresser, one of the Wabash Valley’s favorite sons, were featured in a concert by the Banks of the Wabash Chorus at Terre Haute North Vigo High School.

• Fantastic Sam’s, a new beauty shop owned by Marlon, Mark and Tina Nasser, opened in Riverside Plaza.

1962

• Mayor Ralph Tucker arrived in Tajimi, Japan, Terre Haute’s sister city, and was honored in a parade through this city of 57,000 people.

• The Indiana Association of Future Homemakers of America hosted about 850 youths from Scouting, 4-H, Y-Teens and Future Farmers, at its 16th annual convention. Mrs. Carlos Watson, Indiana State College assistant professor home economic, was the state advisor.

• The recently elected Vigo County School Corp. board of trustees approved the employment of 258 persons as non-teaching staff.

• Birch Bayh, a favorite son, was welcomed home with a big victory parade celebrating his selection as the U.S. Senate candidate by Indiana’s Democratic party at the convention in Indianapolis. Newsmen described the nominee’s wife, Marvella, as “Indiana’s Jackie Kennedy.”

• A new YMCA camp with a shelter was dedicated on eight cleared acres about 11⁄2 miles northwest of West Vigo High School. Ted Rich was the board president.

• Bemis Bros. Bag Co. was constructing a concrete block warehouse addition to its plastic packaging plant on North Fruitridge Avenue.
