South golf edges Rivet on fifth score
Terre Haute South’s fifth score was the difference in boys high school golf Wednesday at Rea Park.
South and Vincennes Rivet each shot 160 and Owen Valley had 168 in their match played in pleasant, breezy conditions. -
Anderson, Smith, Mahurin named Athletes of Year for winter sports
When they first heard the news, they thought immediately of others.
That common unselfishness isn’t all they did well, but certainly helps explain why three four-year high school basketball starters — Nicole Anderson of Terre Haute North, Rhagen Smith of Sullivan and Lane Mahurin of Rockville — have been named Wabash Valley Players of the Year and the Tribune-Star’s Athletes of the Year for winter sports. -
Vigo County prep golf championships rained out
The Vigo County boys high school golf championships, originally scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at Hulman Links, was postponed by rainy weather.
No new date has been announced.
Most other Vigo County sporting events from Tuesday were called off as well. -

Terre Haute North remained unbeaten in high school baseball, sweeping a doubleheader from Warren Central at Don Jennings Field on a sunny, breezy and chilly Saturday.

North picks up team wins in Hall of Fame Invitational
Ten boys teams and 11 girls teams participated in the meet that was divided into two classes for both boys and girls, and lunch was provided afterward at the Indiana Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame and Museum by the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Taylor Shake of Sullivan was one of 12 high school senior athletes awarded a C. Eugene Cato Memorial Scholarship on Thursday by the Indiana High School Athletic Association.

South boys golf team uses balance to win
Terre Haute South was a winner in boys high school boys golf Wednesday at Forest Park.
The Braves counted four scores in the 30s to defeat Northview 146-155 in the first dual match of the season for both teams. Both teams opened the season in the Northview Invitational at the same course last Saturday.
Drew Cahill of South had three birdies and two bogeys in his round to take medalist honors with a 1-under-par 34, edging teammate Luke Peoples, who shot 35, for the honor.
Sam Mimms had 38, while Ryan Cahill and Gregory Stultz each had 39 to round out the South scoring.
Keegan Roembke had one birdie to lead the Knights with 36. Freshman Blake Bennett shot 39 and Dylan Nesty and Sam Grimes each had 40. -
Prep roundup: McKinney’s grand slam leads North softball
Allie McKinney belted a grand-slam home run, Allison Crick added three hits and Morgan Young pitched a four-hit shutout to help Terre Haute North defeat visiting Turkey Run 17-0 in 4 1/2 innings of high school softball Wednesday.

West Vigo softball victorious over Owen Valley
West Vigo is off to a 1-0 start in Western Indiana Conference softball.
The Vikings bested Owen Valley 2-0 on Tuesday in the conference opener for both teams behind the fiv-hit shutout pitching of Hannah Harden.
West Vigo scored both of its runs in the fifth inning when freshman Mary Curley singled to begin the inning.
Baylee Waters walked with one out and Cierra McClain followed with her second hit of the contest to drive in Curley with the first run of the game and Waters scored on a groundout by Shelby Edington.
Harden allowed one hit in the sixth and one in the seventh to close out the contest. The junior walked just one batter and struck out three to improve to 2-1 for the season. -
Prep roundup: North girls tennis wins opener
Terre Haute North won all but one game en route to defeating visiting West Vigo 5-0 in season-opening girls high school tennis Tuesday.
Singles — Anna Potter (THN) def. Kaylen Cheesman 6-0, 6-0; Laura Mascari (THN) def. Payton McCall 6-0, 6-0; Morgan Cook (THN) def. Justice Waltermeir 6-0, 6-0.
Doubles — Olivia Caldwell-Meredith Egan (THN) def. Mackenzie Collins-Sydney Brown 6-0, 6-0; Carmen Nickels-Caroline Potter (THN) def. Sarah Wyrick-Makayla Herring 6-0, 6-1.
JV — North won 13-0.
Next — North (1-0) will remain on its home courts to face Plainfield today. -
PREP ROUNDUP: West Vigo softball picks up victory
Shelby Edington and Brittany Voils hit home runs for West Vigo softball, and Ciera McClain went 4-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Vikings to a victory at Paris by a 12-4 score.

Despite strong efforts from Northview, North, Roncalli wins Braves Bash
Northview and Terre Haute North had their chances to keep Roncalli, tied for seventh in the preseason Class 4A state rankings, from winning the Braves Bash tournament championship for high school softball Saturday at Terre Haute’s Miss Softball America complex.
Neither could get the job done. -
PREP ROUNDUP: Collett's three home runs help North to two more wins at Lafayette
Terre Haute North maintained its perfect start to the high school baseball season as it defeated McCutcheon 16-7 and Lafayette Harrison 7-3 to win the Lafayette Tournament.
North (7-0) exploded for 15 hits in the opener against McCutcheon. Five different Patriots had at least two hits. T.J. Collett had a home run. Sam Wolf had three RBI. -
Linton tops Terre Haute North by a stroke in Northview Invitational
Linton got the high school boys golf season off to a good start, nipping Terre Haute North to win the Northview Invitational played at Forest Park on Saturday.
Seven shots separated the first four teams in the event sponsored by Riddell National Bank. The Miners won with 309 with North second at 310. Terre Haute South and Greencastle each carded 316 and the Tiger Cubs took third on fifth score. -
Braves Bash features close games
As the first round of pool play got underway for the Braves Bash high school softball tournament Friday evening at Terre Haute’s Miss Softball America complex, hard-fought games could be found on three different fields.

Tennis, anyone? Terre Haute South girls inserting freshman Hambrock at No. 1 singles
Terre Haute South is coming off a trip to the girls high school tennis state finals and freshman phenom Lauren Hambrock joins the mix this season.
But Terre Haute North has plenty of talent returning, earning the Patriots a ranking among the state’s top 30 teams.
Considering the two city rivals split a pair of meetings last season — and that it’s almost always an ultra-competitive battle — fans of the respective programs should expect nothing less than some intriguing tennis matches this season. -
Boys golf season to tee off Saturday at Northview Invitational
Most Wabash Valley boys high school golf teams will open the season Saturday, competing in the Northview Invitational at Forest Park.
Play will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. at the course in Brazil.
Players with varsity experience fill the rosters of most teams in the area. Greencastle was the winner of the 2012 Northview tournament, led by sophomores Alec Davis and Luke Brotherton.
Linton has three regulars back from the team that was second and won the Linton Sectional while Terre Haute North has all but one player returning from the third-place team in the Northview event and second-place sectional team.
Most teams in the area will compete in the sectional at Phil Harris Course at Linton again in a revised state golf tournament format. Team and individual qualifiers will vie for regional honors in a regional to be played at Hulman Links.

Prep roundup: Clay City softball gets offense going early to improve to 2-0
Class A No. 19-ranked Clay City scored four runs in the first inning then held off North Knox for a 6-4 non-conference victory in high school girls softball Thursday.
Clay City (2-0) pounded out nine hits, led by Madison Booe and Alyssa Yocum with two each. The Eels had four extra base hits, led by Booe’s first-inning triple and doubles by Brianna Price, Alexis Price, Emmie Kittle and one by winning pitcher Raven Allender.
The Eels scored four runs on five hits in the first inning with Yocum’s triple, doubles by the two Prices and singles by Booe, Whitney Jeffers. -

Brittany Voils went 3 for 3 with a double and three runs scored to help visiting West Vigo its season opener by a 9-6 score in high school softball Wednesday.

Vincennes Lincoln gets first baseball win of season at Terre Haute South
Runs and hits were scarce in high school baseball action Wednesday at Terre Haute South.
Vincennes Lincoln made the most of three hits to defeat the host Braves 2-1 in eight innings to win its first game.
The Alices scored one run without a hit in the fifth inning; the Braves tied it with an unearned run in the seventh and the Alices won it with an unearned run in the eighth. -
North-South All-Star Basketball Classic to feature Wabash Valley talent, coaches
A dozen Wabash Valley basketball players will compete in the 25th anniversary of the North/South Indiana All-Star Basketball Classic at Rose-Hulman.
