Spencer — Caleb Turner’s principal task Wednesday was to chase and deny South Vermillion forward Andy Walsh, a 15-point per game scorer.
So when Sullivan’s 6-foot-1 junior scored seven points in the first 4 minutes, 22 seconds, it was a welcomed bonus. Turner scored off a pass from Rhett Smith, drilled a deep 3-pointer and got a putback bucket to put the Golden Arrows ahead 9-2.
Turner didn’t score another point, but he held Walsh without a field goal until early in the fourth quarter, one key factor in Sullivan’s 61-43 victory Tuesday in the Class 3A Owen Valley boys basketball sectional.
“We got him out of his groove,” Turner said. “We mixed it up for our third game against them.”
Host Owen Valley rolled in Wednesday’s opener, topping Greencastle 72-46 behind a career-high 35 points from University of Indianapolis recruit Cody Vest.
For Sullivan, Smith and Dreyson Boyd took over the bulk of the scoring as the Arrows led by as many as 25 before closing out the Wildcats. Smith finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots, and Boyd had a team-high 18 points, hitting four 3-pointers.
“We wanted to put our best foot forward, and it’s good to get that first win out of the way,” said Boyd, Sullivan’s lone senior. “I started off kind of slow, but I couldn’t get discouraged, just keep on shooting and they’ll fall.”
The Golden Arrows (21-2) set the tone early, taking an 11-2 lead thanks to point guard David Bedwell’s steal and layup. South Vermillion pulled within 13-10 on a 3-pointer by Dylan Reyher, but Boyd knocked down a 27-footer at the buzzer for a 16-10 lead.
The Arrows went into halftime shooting 50 percent from the field, while South Vermillion was 6 for 24 (25 percent).
“We really struggled to get anything going. We kind of stood a lot in our offense, they pressured us, really got after us and we didn’t respond very well,” South Vermillion coach Rodney Idlewine said. “When you get down, it’s tough to come back and be patient. They’re a good team.”
Good teams tend to come out ready to play in the third quarter, and Sullivan was no exception Wednesday. The Arrows’ lead ballooned to 38-21 by the 2:40 mark on a 3-point play by Smith, and then to 41-21 on a wide-open 3 by Boyd, who knocked down another one 30 seconds later for a 44-23 lead.
Smith drove and scored and Bedwell drove right down the lane for two of his 11 points with eight seconds left in the third to cap a 13-2 spurt for coach Jeff Moore’s team.
Moore left the OV gym pleased with a defensive effort that held the Wildcats 14 points below their season average.
“We chased Walsh a little bit. Caleb and Lance [Ellett] did a great job for us tonight. We wanted to play everybody else as penetrators. They have not been a great, great 3-point threat. We switched it up a little, and dropped our zone back,” Moore said.
On Friday, Sullivan faces an Owen Valley team riding a five-game winning streak. Sullivan won the regular-season meeting 61-57 on the road. To win a sectional title, the Arrows will have to repeat that feat Friday.
“It’s going to be tough, Owen Valley’s got a great crowd and Vest is one heck of a player,” Boyd said.
Moore added, “It’s going to be a battle all night.”
Patrick Harpeneau finished with a game-high 20 points for the Wildcats, who finished their season 13-10. Harpeneau, Walsh and starters Logan Laswell, Cody Mumaw and Jaret Hastings are all seniors.
“They got a run on us at the start. We tried fighting back,” Harpeneau said. “They did what they had to do to win, and they’re a good ball team. Best of luck to them.
“It was the first winning season at South Vermillion in six years [last one coming in 2004-5],” Harpeneau continued. “We had a lot of close games we could have won. We had our ups and downs.”
Idlewine looks forward to the future.
“We’ve got some good underclassmen coming up, and they’ll be a fun team to watch,” said the third-year coach.
