HUTSONVILLE —
Jacob Duncan hit four free throws in overtime Friday night as visiting Marshall defeated Hutsonville-Palestine 51-49 in Little Illini Conference action.
The Lions led most of the way but the host team took a 44-43 lead in the final minute of regulation. Duncan hit one free throw to tie the count and force overtime.
The Tigers took a 46-44 lead in the extra session before Duncan hit two free throws for a tie. Logan Cannady’s basket and Thomas Sisson’s free toss put the Lions up 49-46.
Jerry Wilson hit a 3-pointer for another tie but Duncan hit two more free throws with six seconds left for the final score of the contest.
Cannady led the Lions with 23 points and Duncan tallied 14, while Taylor Maurer had six points and 18 rebounds for Marshall. Austin Callahan had 19 points for the Tigers and Kasey Newlin scored 14.

Girls basketball
n Eels, Lakers win — At Clay City, the host Eels and Shakamak posted semifinal wins Friday at the Class A Clay City Sectional.
Clay City defeated Eminence 64-33 in the first game, while Shakamak overcame White River Valley 23-22 in the nightcap.
Championship play is 7:30 p.m. today.

n Teutopolis 42, Marshall 26 — At Teutopolis, Ill., Marshall jumped ahead 4-0 only to watch Teutopolis score the next 11 points Thursday in the championship game of the Class 2A Teutopolis Regional.
Kaydie Grooms led Marshall with nine points and eight rebounds. Jessie Wendt led Teutopolis with 19 points, including 13 of 14 at the free throw line.
The Lions finished their season with a 25-2 record, setting the record for the most wins in school history.

New route leads to same place for South girls tennis
For so many years, the road to the IHSAA girls tennis state finals for local teams ran through Vincennes (regional) and Jasper (semistate). In other words, south and more south.
This year, their trip was re-routed through Greencastle (regional) and Center Grove (semistate). So it cnahged to east and more east. -

South Vermillion softball's late-season surge comes to end
A late-season surge by South Vermillion wasn’t quite enough to halt a high school softball sectional winning streak by the host team Thursday night, as Edgewood got on top early and held on for a 5-2 win in the championship game of the Class 3A Edgewood Sectional.
The loss was just the second in the last 12 games for the Wildcats. The Mustangs, however, haven’t lost a sectional softball game for eight years in a row. -
