Nashville —
Taken over its entire body of work, West Vigo’s offense wasn’t spectacular against Brown County on Friday.
Taken in key situations, particularly long distance downs, the Vikings were very good against the Eagles.
West Vigo converted a long third down distance and a fourth down conversion into a pair of touchdowns in the Western Indiana Conference game. Combined with a touchdown that came via a Brown County turnover those plays helped West Vigo defeat Brown County 24-7.
“We’ve got good playmakers and [quarterback] Lance Garrett is beginning to trust them. He threw the ball out there and let them make plays,” West Vigo coach Jeff Cobb said.
West Vigo (2-1, 1-0 WIC) got a good performance from quarterback Lance Garrett, who completed 13 of 25 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns.
But despite the healthy passing numbers, West Vigo struggled on the ground, amassing 103 rushing yards on 37 carries, so the performance didn’t completely please Cobb. Brown County also turned the ball over six times which gave the Vikings ample chances to drive on a short field.
“I have some concerns that we’re seeing the same mistakes out of the same people. So we’re going to look at some personnel changes. I’m pleased with the 24-7 victory, but I’m seeing some of the same things [West Vigo has done wrong] and that bothers me. We’re not in week one, we’re in week three, so we can’t be sloppy,” Cobb said.
Brown County (0-3, 0-2 WIC) took the lead in the first quarter as the Eagles drove downfield and scored on a Konnor Graber one-yard plunge, but a six-play sequence in the first two minutes of the second quarter turned the game in the Vikings’ favor.
On the second play of the quarter with West Vigo facing 3rd-and-20 at the BC 46, Lance Garrett threw downfield to Chase Silcock, who got behind the BC secondary on a streak route. The pass was perfectly delivered and Silcock scored on the 46-yard touchdown pass to tie the game.
On the ensuing kickoff, BC’s Kaleb Totten returned the ball to the BC 36, but fumbled the ball away when he was hit.
West Vigo had a golden opportunity and seized upon it. A 20-yard run by Dylan Aff was the key play as Garrett scored on a 5-yard keeper to put West Vigo up 14-7.
Another BC turnover, this time an interception by Aff, gave West Vigo another chance late in the half, but BC stopped West Vigo on downs at the BC 4 in the final minute of the half.
The third quarter was a stalemate, though Brown County largely controlled the game on the ground.
The fourth quarter began with West Vigo stopping a Brown County drive at the BC 25 as the Vikings got the ball at the BC 43 after a punt. A 13-yard run by Aff put the Vikings at the BC 30, but the Vikings advanced just three yards in the next three plays.
On 4th-and-7, West Vigo isolated Cody Thornton on BC defensive back Bryce Boyer on the left side. Thornton ran a perfect slant pattern, caught a well-delivered pass from Garrett, and broke a half-hearted tackle attempt to go 27 yards for a decisive touchdown to make it 21-7 with 8:05 left in the game.
“Cody is starting to realize how good of a player he can be, both offensively and defensively. He’s all over the field making plays. He’s a playmaker,” Cobb said.
BC’s final turnover cut the heart out of them on the second play on its next drive as Quincy Robinson fumbled the ball away at the BC 45. The Eagles never threatened again and West Vigo tacked on a 25-yard Kevin Gregg field goal with 4:16 left in the game.
West Vigo plays at Class A No. 2 Linton next Friday.
