The very young Northview Knights learned a couple of hard lessons in their opening high school football game.
Out of the 18-9 loss to visiting Indianapolis Broad Ripple, the Knights learned a poor week of practice leads to a poor game and you can’t turn it on in the fourth quarter and win.
For three quarters the Knights did everything wrong. They dropped passes, missed blocks, committed eight penalties and tackled poorly. The Knights trailed 18-0 going into the fourth quarter.
“You could look at any part of the football game, offense, defense, special teams. There was nothing that was executed at all the way the way we have been practicing the last three weeks,” Northview coach George Gettle said.
“I’m not trying to be negative, but that was a very poorly played football game.”
Broad Ripple running back Jamonte Hampton and wide receiver Isaac Hampton were more than the Knights could handle. Hampton rushed for 108 yards and Hampton caught touchdown passes of 46 and 11 yards.
The Rockets’ third touchdown came off a block punt, Isaac Hampton blocked a Northview punt and took it 38 yards for the 18-0 lead in the third quarter.
Northview senior Jesse Miller sparked the Kngihts in the fourth quarter with a 69-yard run right up the middle. He took the Knights to the Rockets’ 1-yard line and freshman quarterback Tucker Stewart scored his first varsity touchdown on a quarterback sneak.
Northview drove to the Broad Ripple 9-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. The Knights stopped the Rockets on three plays. Instead of punting, the Rockets’ punter stepped out of the end zone, giving Northview the two-point safety, as well as the ball.
Northview’s Stewart, who was 8-15 passing in the fourth quarter, immediately hit freshman classmate Hunter Ragan for a 32-yard gain and went to Justice Bulchholz for six yards.
But at the Broad Ripple 15, the Rockets’ Isaac Hampton tipped a pass away in the corner of the end zone and the Knights’ field goal attempt was wide right.
