Marshall boys basketball pulls away from Martinsville

MARSHALL, ILL. — Marshall got back on the winning side of the ledger in boys high school basketball Tuesday night, defeating Martinsville 85-37 in McNary Gymnasium.

The Lions snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 5-3 for the season.

They were tied at 12-12 with the Bluestreaks after one period as their Clark County rivals were 4 of 5 from the field and took advantage of Marshall turnovers.

Marshall coach Tom Brannan was pleased with the way his team played after the first quarter.

“We had seven turnovers and talked about taking care of the basketball. We played with confidence, made shots and held Martinsville to seven points in the second and third quarters,” said the veteran coach.

“We needed this one. I hope we can build on it,” he said.

Marshall lost to Casey last Tuesday and dropped a close game at undefeated Flora on Friday.

“We got thumped by Casey … and the kids responded against Flora and lost a gut-wrenching game,” said Brannan.

Mulkins had 21 points, eight boards and four steals for the 0-7 Bluestreaks as four players went the distance for the team.

Marshall hits the road again Friday to play Little Illini Conference foe Olney. The Lions defeated Olney in the Capital Classic but Brannan said the the team “will be tough” on its home court.
