Terre Haute North led most of the way Saturday night to defeat Bloomington South 57-43 to give the Patriots a split in weekend boys basketball action and a 3-2 record for the season.
“It was a total team effort. We did a great job on them on defense and our execution on the offensive end was really good,” said North coach Todd Woelfle.
“We were able to rebound from a difficult night on offense on Friday. We played well on both ends of the court,” he added.
The Patriots shot just over 50 percent from the field, connecting on 21 of 41 shots, and held a 35-20 edge on the boards. The Panthers were 16 of 39 from the field.
North was 12 of 18 from the free-throw line. The Panthers were 9 of12.
North scored the first five points of the contest, Calvin Blank getting three of them, and had a 12-5 lead at the first stop.
North held a 16-7 advantage early in the second stanza but the Panthers cut the lead to 22-18 at the intermission.
The Panthers took their only lead of the game at 35-34 on a basket by sophomore Keaton Hendricks, who had 11 of his 21 points in the period. Terre Haute North scored the next 10 points and got six of them at the gratis stripe.
The Patriots were up 40-35 after three periods and 44-35 before Aareone McCoy hit a free toss and Hendricks hit a 3-pointer to cut the Patriots’ lead to 44-39.
The Panthers got no closer the rest of the way as they dropped to 2-2 for the season.
Steven Davis led the Patriots in scoring with 18 points and he grabbed eight rebounds.
Blank had 13 points and five boards and Austin Lewis scored 12 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
