Several Wabash Valley runners, jumpers, hurdlers and throwers are ready to compete in the IHSAA state finals this weekend at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington.
The girls will battle Friday and the boys will take their turn Saturday, with each starting at 3 p.m.
In the girls meet, Valley representatives and their seeds include Greencastle junior Colleen Weatherford in the 800-meter run (seeded second out of 27 competitors with a regional time of 2 minutes, 12.62 seconds) and 1,600-meter run (eighth out of 27 with 5:06.39); North junior Chanli Mundy in the 3,200 (10th out of 34 with 11:08.85); Terre Haute North’s 4-by-800 relay squad consisting of sophomore Jessi Conley, junior Megan Howes, senior Emily Cotterman and junior Sydney Dickerson (10th out of 27 with 9:35.16); North freshman Keirra Porter in the 100 hurdles (13th out of 27 with 15.14); Linton sophomore Micaela Hazlewood in the discus (16th out of 27 with 126 feet, 7 inches); North sophomore Rachel Gutish in the pole vault (tied for 16th out of 29 with 10-6); North Vermillion sophomore Paige McConchie in the 100 (18th out of 27 with 12.58); Terre Haute South sophomore Nikki Thiede in the 1,600 (22nd out of 27 with 5:16.32) and the 3,200 (34th out of 34 with 11:40.24); Northview sophomore Leeanna Knight in the long jump (24th out of 27 with 16-9 1/4); Riverton Parke junior Sara Dickey in the shot put (25th out of 27 with 37-2); Shakamak junior Savannah Turner (27th out of 27 with 5:23.73); and North’s 4-by-400 relay squad consisting of Dickerson, Conley, Cotterman and junior TaPring Goatee (27th out of 27 with 4:09.86).
“Our 4 by 800 relay, Chanli Mundy and Keirra Porter all have a good chance of making it to the podium [finishing in the top nine],” North girls coach Mike Dason assessed. “Our 4 by 8 broke the school record this year, but we have not really run to our potential yet. With the potential each of the girls has, we have high hopes for what we can do [Friday].
“Chanli has been consistently getting better and better. After winning the [girls] McMillan Award this week, she wants to represent Vigo County and do well in the 3,200. As for Keirra, we have no idea what her potential is because she’s only a freshman. She’s been challenged a little bit this year. We’ll see how she does. She’s a competitor; that’s for sure.”
In the 800, the only girl seeded higher than Greencastle’s Weatherford is Evansville Central senior Taylor Wiley, who posted a regional time of 2:10.75.
In the boys meet, Valley representatives and their seeds include North senior Connor Curley in the pole vault (seeded second out of 27 competitors with a regional height of 15-7); South sophomore Jackson Bertoli in the 3,200 (second out of 27 with 9:18.48); Cloverdale senior Joseph Rumley in the 800 (fifth out of 27 with 1:55.35); South junior Logan Hambrock in the 1,600 (13th out of 28 with 4:25.35); West Vigo senior Andrew Kump in the 1,600 (15th out of 28 with 4:25.45); South junior Tyler Seibert in the 400 (18th out of 27 with 50.15); Linton senior Kenton Helton in the long jump (18th out of 28 with 21-7 1/4); South senior Nick Jaeger in the high jump (tied for 19th out of 30 with 6-4); North junior Cole Seward in the 300 hurdles (22nd out of 27 with 40.11); Riverton Parke sophomore Riley Stohler in the 800 (22nd out of 27 with 1:58.48); North’s 4-by-800 relay squad consisting of Seward, sophomore Nathan Moshos, sophomore Grant Potts and freshman Peter Davis (23rd out of 27 with 8:09.08); North’s 4-by-400 relay squad consisting of senior Cameron Quinn, sophomore Maciej Tomaszewski, junior Cameron Stewart and Seward (24th out of 27 with 3:27.95); North junior Larry Davis in the shot put (25th out of 27 with 51-10 1/2); South’s 4-by-400 relay squad consisting of junior Joe Harris, senior Jermaine Smith, senior Stewart Dagnon and Seibert (27th out of 27 with 3:29.30); and Linton sophomore Grant Stamm in the 110 hurdles (27th out of 27 with 15.48) and 300 hurdles (27th out of 27 with 40.95).
“Nick [Jaeger] went 6-4 at the regional, but he’s been going 6-8 most of the year,” South boys coach Mark Raetz pointed out. “So I see him in the mix with the leaders.
“Bertoli hasn’t lost in the postseason yet [in the 3,200]. Against a pretty stacked field at the regional, he still came out the winner. He’s a guy we know can compete hard. Winning state will definitely be a challenge … but Jackson is a guy who will always come out and compete hard.”
The only runner seeded higher than Bertoli in the 3,200 is Columbus North senior Christopher Kelsey, who posted a regional time of 9:14.14.
The only pole-vaulter seeded higher than North’s Curley is Penn senior Kyle Johnston, who cleared 15-9 in his regional.
It also should be noted that North’s Seward qualified in three events — one individual and two relays.

Terre Haute North offense unable to get going in loss to Mooresville
Jack Kirchner chose to give credit Monday night to Mooresville pitcher Taylor Chitwood, not to the Greg Maddux-size strike zone she seemed to enjoy.
